Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night, Falls in Three Sets Against LIU

EASTON, Mass. (November 4, 2023) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team celebrated their class of 2024 Saturday night, senior captains Lauren McCloskey (Salem, N.H./Salem), Skylar Hanley (Griswold, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), Kristen DeLorenzo (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), and Jentry Allen (Lucas, Texas/Lovejoy), at Merkert Gymnasium prior to a Northeast Conference matchup against LIU, falling in three sets, 3-0 (9-25, 13-25, 17-25).

Skyhawk Summary

McCloskey led the Skyhawks with six kills on a .600 kill percentage, also tallying a team-high three service aces. Freshman Lauren MacKellar (Northville, Mich./Northville) notched three kills and one dig in the match for Stonehill. Junior Emma Graves (Berkshire, N.Y./Newark Valley) and freshman Abby Farrell (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) paced the Skyhawks with three block assists apiece. Farrell also tallied two solo blocks to tie her career-high with five total blocks. Hanley led the team with eight digs while junior Isabella Arcidiacono (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) had a team-high five assists.

How it Happened

SET 1 | The first set was all LIU as they built an early lead at 7-3 before going on a 10-1 run as they led by 12, 17-5. The Sharks would win the first set 25-9 as the Skyhawks never put together consecutive scores in the set after they took a 2-1 lead in the very beginning.

SET 2 | The NEC foes were knotted up at 2-2 before LIU put together nine straight scores to start the second set, leading 11-2. The Sharks took their largest lead of the second set at 12 points when they continued their strong play as they led 17-5. LIU would win the second set by the same margin, 25-13, to take a 2-0 match lead.

SET 3 | The Sharks scored the first five points to begin the third set and led 9-2 as they carried their momentum into the third. Stonehill had some fight in them as they put together a 4-1 run to trim the LIU lead to six, 13-7. The Sharks responded and went back up by double digits, leading 18-8. MacKellar would tally three consecutive kills for the Skyhawks late in the third set as Stonehill stayed in the match, trailing by six, 23-17. The next two scores went to LIU as they won the set 25-17, winning the match 3-0.

Stonehill volleyball returns to action next weekend when they play their last two matches on the road starting with a 5 p.m. Northeast Conference matchup at Sacred Heart on Friday.
