Volleyball Goes Down in Four Sets to Hofstra in Dartmouth Invitational Opener

HANOVER, N.H. - (September 8, 2023) - Stonehill volleyball opened the Dartmouth Invitational with a match against Hofstra University at Leede Arena, falling in four sets, 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 15-25, 14-25).

Freshman Georgia Murphy led the Skyhawks with 11 kills and also tallied three digs. Sophomore Mia Berardino notched eight kills of her own and led the team with two blocks. Freshman Lauren MacKellar had six kills, three digs, and a block assist. Senior Lauren McCloskey recorded seven kills and two blocks. Sophomore Delaney Mihelich and freshman Maddie Schamaun both tied for the Skyhawk lead with 12 assists each.

SET 1 | Stonehill started the match strong, jolting out to a 4-1 lead on the heels of three Hofstra errors. The Pride would score the next four points to take their first lead of the match (5-4). The score would be neck and neck for most of the match, with neither team going up by more than two points. The score was tied 15-15 when the Skyhawks went on a 10-6 run to close out the set, winning 25-21.

SET 2 | Stonehill fell behind 5-2 early in the second set but would respond, as the teams found themselves tied nine different times, with the final tie being at 13-13. The Pride built another three-point lead (19-16), and pulled away from the Skyhawks, winning the second set 25-20.

SET 3 | Hofstra started the third with six of the first nine points, taking a 6-3 lead. After the Skyhawks cut their deficit to two points (7-5), the Pride never let Stonehill come within two points for the remainder of the set. Hofstra went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to pull away, going up 21-12. They'd close out the third set, winning 25-15 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

SET 4 | Stonehill went up 1-0 before the Pride scored the next five points, but the Skyhawks responded to come within one point (7-6). Hofstra would go on a run of their own, scoring six points unanswered and nine of the next ten (16-7). The Pride lead was too much for the Skyhawks, with Hofstra taking the match in four sets, winning the final set 25-14.
