NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (April 21, 2010) – Stonehill College got a pair of strong pitching performances to sweep a doubleheader at Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference softball action at Volpe Field this afternoon. The Skyhawks picked up a 4-2 win in game one, before sophomore Kellie Reardon (Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) fired a two-hitter in a 2-1 victory in game two.

Reardon and classmate Samanta Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) both turned in strong pitching performances on the afternoon with complete game efforts.

Junior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) led the Stonehill offense as he hit a combined 3-for-6 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) was 2-for-5 with a pair of walks and an RBI, while junior Ashley Langlois (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) homered and drove on three runs on the day.

Sophomore Monique Gosselin (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) was the lone Merrimack batter to post multiple hits for the afternoon as she hit a combined 3-for-6 with a home run, stolen base, run scored and two RBI.

Samantha Krantz and Katy Abarr led Stonehill to a 4-2 win in game one of today’s doubleheader.


Junior Katy Abarr was 2-for-3 with a double, home runs and two RBI in game one. 

Abarr hit 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBI to pace Stonehill’s offensive attack. Ashley Langlois finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, while freshman Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) batted 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and two runs scored.

Krantz posted the win (6-5) in the circle for the Skyhawks, allowing the two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks in the complete game outing.

Monique Gosselin paced Merrimack as she hit 2-for-3 with a home run, stolen base and two RBI. Senior Emily Cummings (Andover, Mass./Andover) batted 1-for-2 with a double.

Sophomore Alex Gallant (Salem, N.H./Salem) took the loss (3-6) for the Warriors, yielding four earned runs on six hits and five walks with two strikeouts in six innings.

Merrimack struck first with a two-run first. Junior Kristen Lemay (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) drew a leadoff walk before Gosselin delivered her fifth home run of the season with one out. The Warriors went on to load the bases with two singles and a walk, but Stonehill was able to escape further damage with two groundouts.

Krantz settled down from there and retired eight-straight batters and 12 of the next 14 after the first inning.

Stonehill went to work at the plate and knotted the score with a pair in the fourth. Remick drew a one-out walk, before Abarr belted her fourth home run of the season and third in as many games. The Skyhawks took the lead with two-runs in the sixth with all the damage done after Gallant retired the first two batters. Remick walked and Abarr doubled and the two came around to score on a single from Langlois.

Kellie Reardon fired a two-hitter as Stonehill worked around seven errors to record a 2-1 win in game two and complete the sweep. Reardon (2-2) yielded just the one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk in the complete game victory.

Ashley Langlois led the Stonehill offense as she hit 1-for-3 with a home run. Courtney Marchand was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored.

Kristen Lemay led Merrimack as she hit 1-for-3 with a home run, while Monique Gosselin had the Warriors only other hit, finishing 1-for-3.

Freshman Courtney Parker (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham Memorial) took the loss (1-4), allowing the two earned runs on six hits with no strikeouts or walks in two innings.

Stonehill got all the runs it would need with single runs in the first and second. Stryker led off the game with a single, stole second, and then scored on a single from Marchand. Langlois doubled the Skyhawks lead in the second with her first home run of the year.

Merrimack cut its deficit in half in the third on Lemay’s third home run of the season.

Stonehill (16-12-1, 11-7 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow, when it hosts 11th-ranked University of New Haven at Fr. Gartland Field at 3 p.m. The doubleheader is a makeup from Sunday’s rainout. Merrimack (11-22, 7-13 NE-10) hits the road for a doubleheader at Le Moyne College on Saturday at noon.
