Richmond, R.I., native honored for performance on the field and in the classroom

EASTON, Mass. (May 25, 2010) – Stonehill College junior second baseman Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) has been recognized for her performances on both the softball field and in the classroom with her selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District third team for softball by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) throughout New England and New York.

Abarr, who is the first Stonehill softball student-athlete to earn Academic All-District honors since outfielder Jennifer Burge collected her second of two-straight first team selections in 2004, has achieved a 3.81 cumulative grade point average at the College while majoring in neuroscience. Earlier this spring she received a Saint Thomas Aquinas Medal for having the highest cumulative GPA on her team. She has also earned NE-10 Commissioner's honor roll and Athletic Director's honor roll honors every semester at the College.

Abarr started all 38 games played (out of 40) for Stonehill this spring and hit .265 (30-for-113) with 16 runs scored, three doubles, a team-high matching four home runs and 17 RBI. She slugged .398 and posted a .323 on-base percentage with six multiple-hit games. Abarr hit .314 (16-for-51) with runners on base, including a .333 (10-30) average with runners in scoring position, converting 4-of-9 (44.4%) opportunities with a runner on third and less than two outs, adding six two-out RBI.

In 26 NE-10 contests, Abarr hit .289 (22-for-76) with 12 runs scored, three doubles, a team-high four home runs and 15 RBI. In her two seasons with the Stonehill softball team, she has started all 77 games played and totaled 45 hits with 23 runs scored, seven doubles, four home runs and 24 RBI.

Abarr, the daughter of Daniel and Maureen Abarr of Richmond, R.I., was valedictorian of her senior class at The Prout School in 2007. She attended Boston University for one year before transferring to Stonehill.

Stonehill (20-19-1, 15-13 NE-10) made its third postseason appearance in program history this spring, marking its second trip in three years, before falling to American International College (1-0) in the first round. The Skyhawks posted several notable wins in 2010, defeating defending NCAA Division II National Champions Lock Haven University (8-2) on March 8. Stonehill swept an NE-10 doubleheader at AIC (4-0 & 1-0 (9 inn.)) on April 10 during a stretch in which the pitching staff posted 34-straight scoreless innings.
