Five-run second inning pushes Falcons to 5-1 victory in nightcap

WALTHAM, Mass. (April 13, 2010) – Stonehill College collected a second-straight doubleheader split against Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference softball action this afternoon. The Skyhawks posted a 3-1 victory in eight innings in game one, before the Falcons rebounded with a 5-1 win in game two.

Freshman Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) paced the Stonehill offense, hitting a combined 4-for-6 with a triple, stolen base and four RBI. Classmate Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) was 3-for-7 with a triple and two runs scored.

Junior Christine D’Amico (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) batted.3-for-7 with a triple and RBI, while sophomore Jasmine Ortiz (Hamden, Conn./Career) hit 3-for-7 with a double, triple, run scored and three RBI.

Nicole Eisenmann singled to right center with one out in the top of the eighth inning to drive in two runs and lift Stonehill to a 3-1 victory in game one.


Senior Kait Mendall earned her fifth win of the season in game one.

Eisenmann finished 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI to lead Stonehill. Courtney Marchand hit 2-for-4 with a triple and run scored, while freshman Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) batted 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.

Senior Kait Mendall (Middleboro, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) earned the win (5-2) in the circle for the Skyhawks, allowing an earned run while scatting six hits over the eight innings with four strikeouts and no walks.

Jasmine Ortiz and Christine D’Amico each hit 2-for-4 for Bentley, with D’Amico posting a triple and Ortiz doubling. Senior Christine Figueredo (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Sophomore Tara Fogarty (Chester, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) took the loss (4-5), yielding three earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk over eight innings.

Bentley struck first, scoring its lone run in the second inning as freshman Taylor Feery (Cromwell, Conn./Mercy) was hit by a Mendall pitch with two out and later scored on a single to center from Figueredo.

Stonehill knotted the score in the top of the sixth when Wilcox doubled to left with one out, advancing to third on an error by the Bentley leftfielder, and then scored when Eisenmann followed with a triple to center.

Stonehill pulled ahead in the eighth as Marchand led off with a single and was sacrificed to second before Wilcox singled and reached second on the throw. Eisenmann followed with a two-run single to right center. Mendall worked around a two-out single by D’Amico in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win. The single snapped a streak of ten-straight Falcons retired by Mendall.

Bentley 5, Stonehill 1 – Game 2

Bentley scored all five runs in the second inning in posting a 5-1 victory over Stonehill in game two. The Falcons collected their five runs in the game with the benefit of just four hits, taking advantage of a Stonehill error and four walks.


Freshman Courtney Marchand scored the Skyhawks lone run in game two.

Jasmine Ortiz batted 1-for-3 with a triple, run scored and three RBI. Her bases loaded triple with one out in the bottom of the second inning sparked Bentley’s five-run second. Christine D’Amico hit 1-for-3 with an RBI, while junior Maitlyn Kraft (New Braunfels, Texas/St. Mary’s Hall) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Freshman Carly Taitz (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) picked up the win (4-2) in the circle, allowing an earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk over five-plus innings. Senior Ashley Messina (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) collected her first save of the season with two perfect innings of relief, striking out one.

Nicole Eisenmann led Stonehill, hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI and stolen base. Senior Kristen Clark (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) batted 2-for-3, while Courtney Marchand finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Sophomore Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) suffered the loss (5-5), surrendering five runs, three earned, on three hits and four walks with a strikeout in 1.2 innings. Classmate Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) retired 13 of the 15 batters she faced, including the first nine, allowing just one hit in 4.1 shutout innings of relief, striking out four.

Bentley loaded the bases with one out in the second with two walks and a single through the left side by Kraft. Ortiz cleared the bases with her triple, scoring when sophomore Chanelle Morse (Lowville, N.Y./Lowville Academy) grounded out. D’Amico added an RBI single up the middle to cap the frame.

Stonehill got one of those runs right back in the third as Marchand drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a two-out single to left by Eisenmann. Bentley pitching recovered to retire seven of the next eight batters before Clark led off the sixth with a single through the right side. Junior Katy Abarr (Richmond, R.I./The Prout School) followed with a single to left, but Messina entered and stranded the baserunners before going on to retire the Skyhawks in order in the seventh to clinch the win.

Stonehill (13-11-1, 8-6 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University for a Northeast-10 doubleheader starting at noon. Bentley (10-10, 7-5 NE-10) visits Assumption College tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
