Benigni Named NE10 Rookie of the Week

EASTON, Mass. (January 10, 2022) – Stonehill College men's basketball sophomore guard Jackson Benigni has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week by the league office this afternoon.

Benigni earns the NE10 weekly award for the first time after helping Stonehill return from a nearly three-week layoff with a big 73-64 road win at Le Moyne College on Saturday. He scored in double-figures for the eighth time in 11 games this season with 12 points, aided by 8-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds and four assists. Of his eight free-throws made, four came in the final 22-seconds to help seal the win as the Skyhawks finished 18-for-20 (90%) from the line in the contest, including 12-for-12 in the second half.

Benigni has appeared in all 11 games in his first official collegiate season, starting four, and sits fourth among Stonehill scoring leaders with 11.1 points per game, converting 80.4-percent (41-for-51) of his free-throws. He is second on the team with 5.3 rebounds and adds 2.4 assists and 0.6 steals in 26.6 minutes per game. Benigni ranks third among NE10 leaders for made free-throws per game (3.7), while ranking 12th in free-throw percentage this season.

Benigni has scored in double-figures eight times this winter, netting a season-high 16 points in Stonehill's 69-50 win over the University of Bridgeport on November 17. He has also netted 15 points in three games in addition to that total in the Skyhawks preseason exhibition at Division I Providence College on October 21. Benigni pulled down a season-high nine rebounds at Franklin Pierce University on December 15 and matched his season-best with his four assists at Le Moyne on Saturday, collecting a season-high two steals at Caldwell University on November 13.

Stonehill (8-4, 4-2 NE10), ranked No. 5 in this week's D2SIDA East Region poll, have a three-game schedule on tap for the week, starting tomorrow night, when the Skyhawks host Adelphi University, ranked No. 9 in the region, for an NE10 clash at Merkert Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks will host No. 10 Southern New Hampshire University for an NE10 makeup game on Thursday at 7 p.m., before wrapping up the week at No. 6 University of New Haven on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
