Skyhawks cap 3-0 week to extend win streak to five games

EASTON, Mass. (November 28, 2021) – Stonehill College, receiving votes in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll and ranked No. 6 in the D2SIDA East Region poll, turned in another strong defensive effort in posting its fifth-straight win with a 78-58 decision over Molloy College in non-conference men's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

How it Happened


  • Sims added 17 points and eight rebounds (PHOTO BY Mary Gettens)
    Stonehill never trailed, scoring the first four points of the contest on its way to an eight-point cushion (12-4) after a three-point play from Hanson less than five minutes into the game.
  • Molloy followed by trimming the lead to two (12-10) after a pull up jumper from Fergus two minutes later.
  • A quick seven-point burst saw Stonehill open a 12-point lead (27-15) after a Sims three-pointer with 8:53 to play in the opening half.
  • A second Sims triple gave Stonehill a 13-point advantage (33-20) two minutes later, before Molloy rallied to within five (34-29) after a three-point play from freshman Kenny Lazo with 3:22 left in the half.
  • Stonehill restored a 12-point halftime lead (41-29) and then quickly grabbed a 17-point advantage (49-32) after Sims split two free-throws six minutes into the second half.
  • Stonehill wouldn't allow Molloy back within 15 points the rest of the way, stretching the cushion to 21 points (59-38) after a Burnett jumper with 8:43 to play before opening a 23-point lead (65-42) on a layup off a turnover by freshman Christopher Melis with six minutes remaining, a lead the Skyhawks would also match in the closing seconds.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill capped a 3-0 week by extending its winning streak to five games with today's victory. It marks the Skyhawks first five game win streak since winning six in a row in late November/December 2018.
  • Stonehill held Molloy to 37.1-percent shooting, marking its third straight game the Skyhawks opponent has shot under 40-percent from the floor and the fourth time this season overall.
  • Stonehill has limited its last three opponents under 60 points and four overall.
  • Hanson's game-high 18 points marks his career-high, including his time at Columbia and Xavier, and is his first double-figure scoring game of the season.
  • Burnett finished an assist shy of his first career double-double with his career-high nine helpers today, scoring in double-figures for the fourth-straight game (five overall).
  • Sims has now reached double figures in all seven games for Stonehill this season.
