Seahawks score twice in opening five minutes to grab control on way to win

EASTON, Mass. (October 27, 2023) – Wagner College scored twice in the opening five minutes to fuel a 3-0 victory over Stonehill College in a Northeast Conference field hockey matchup on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Highlights

  • Freshman Puck Schenk preserved her first career shutout at Wagner with four saves, including three in the second quarter as Stonehill pressed to cut into an early two-goal deficit.
  • Freshman Floortje Leunisse was among three different goal scorers for Wagner, netting the gamewinning goal just 95-seconds into the game.
  • Postgrads Sara Nelson and Laura Van Hamburg also scored goals for the Seahawks.
  • Junior Shannon Conte finished with six saves in the Stonehill goal.

How It Happened

  • Leunisse opened the scoring 95-seconds into the contest following a penalty corner when she followed up a shot that was saved by Conte and pushed it into the cage for her first career goal.
  • Nelson scored her second goal of the year five minutes into the quarter with another rebound following a Conte save of the initial shot.
  • Conte made four of her six saves in the opening quarter, allowing Stonehill to stay in touch.
  • One of Schenk's three saves in the second quarter came on a penalty stroke four minutes in as Stonehill fought back to try and get on the scoreboard and kickstart a rally.
  • Van Hamburg extended the Wagner lead with 3:39 remaining in the first half with her third goal of the season. With the Seahawks collecting a Stonehill turnover in the defensive zone, Van Hamburg collected the ball and fired a shot into the right side.
  • Neither team would score in the second half, with Wagner posting four of its five penalty corners in the third period.
