Stark leads Skyhawks five goal scorers with four-point game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (September 22, 2023) – Stonehill College got goals from five different players in securing its first win of the season after a 5-0 triumph over Queens University of Charlotte in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Bessant Field this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Freshman Tyra Stark led five different goal scorers for Stonehill with the first four points of her collegiate career, finishing with a goal and two assists.
  • Senior All-American Raegan Hickey and classmates Claudia Crowe and Erin Heffernan each contributed a goal and assist for the Skyhawks, while freshman Julieta D'Antonio chipped in with her first collegiate goal.
  • Junior Shannon Conte preserved her first career shutout with two saves – both in the second half.
  • Freshman Grace Meinke registered eight saves in goal for Queens.

How It Happened

  • Stonehill grabbed a quick two goal lead off the sticks of freshmen, with Stark netting her first collegiate goal off a penalty corner 2:54 into the game, assisted by Heffernan on the stop and corner insert by Crowe.
  • D'Antonio's first collegiate goal doubled the Skyhawks lead two and a half minutes later.
  • Hickey netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season to stretch the Stonehill lead to three goals 3:57 into the second half, with Stark dishing out her first career assist on the play.

    Stonehill capped the scoring with two quick goals in the fourth quarter as Hickey set up Crowe for her second goal of the year 3:47 into the final frame, before Stark dished out her second helper of the afternoon on Heffernan's first goal of the year three minutes later to cap the scoring in the game.

Noteworthy

  • Conte's first career shutout is Stonehill's first at the NCAA Division I level and first overall since a 4-0 victory at Southern Connecticut State University on October 29, 2021.
  • Crowe dished out her team-leading fourth assist of the season, which shares the lead among Northeast Conference leaders. The four assists match her career-best set in 2021 and gives her ten over her 41 career games played.
  • Hickey shares the lead in the NEC with her team-best four goals, giving her 18 goals in 41 career games played.
  • Stonehill's five goals are its most at the NCAA Division I level, surpassing its four markers in a 4-3 win at Lindenwood (Mo.) University on September 11, 2022. It's the Skyhawks most in a single game since a 7-1 win over Mercy College on September 18, 2021.
