EASTON, Mass. (September 29, 2023) – Fairfield University scored twice in each of the middle two quarters to secure a 5-1 victory over Stonehill College the Northeast Conference field hockey opener for both on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Highlights

  • Senior forward Carmel Van Dijk scored the first two goals for Fairfield as it netted the first five goals of the contest on its way to the win to open the NEC season.
  • Fairfield also got goals from junior Agustina Casteluchi as well as sophomores Alex Senior and Pilar Mengotti in securing its fifth win over its last six games.
  • Senior All-American Raegan Hickey scored her NEC-leading seventh goal of the season for Stonehill.
  • Junior Payton Rahn registered four saves in goal for Fairfield, while junior Shannon Conte added two stops for Stonehill.

How It Happened

  • Van Dijk opened the scoring off a cross from the right side by freshman Dominique Van Der Zee with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Van Dijk doubled the Fairfield lead 3:31 into the second when she knocked in her third goal of the season at the doorstep off a loose ball.
  • Casteluchi extended the Stags lead 62-seconds later when she converted a penalty stroke for her second goal of the year.
  • Fairfield sealed the win with a pair of goals in the third quarter as Senior netted her fourth of the season 9:54 in, followed by Mengotti's third off a corner less than two minutes left.

    Stonehill got on the scoreboard five minutes into the final frame when Hickey knocked in a loose ball at the right side for her seventh goal of the season.

Noteworthy

  • Hickey leads the Northeast Conference with her seven goals in ten games, scoring for the third-straight game and fourth over Stonehill's last five. Today's goal is the 21st of her Skyhawks career (43 games).
  • Fairfield entered today's game ranked No. 17 in NCAA I field hockey for RPI.

Stonehill (1-9, 0-1 NEC) is off until next Friday, when it hosts LIU for an NEC matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 3 p.m. Fairfield (6-2, 1-0 NEC) hosts Columbia University on Sunday at noon.
