Pompeo's fourth quarter goal sends Wildcats to victory

DAVIDSON, N.C. (September 24, 2023) – Davidson College scored two fourth quarter goals to secure a 3-1 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field today.

Junior Abby Pompeo scored her sixth goal of the season 2:53 into the fourth quarter to send Davidson on to the win. Junior Shannon Conte finished with 13 saves for Stonehill to record her fourth double-digit save total of the season.

Highlights

  • Pompeo's game winning goal was among three different goal scorers for Davidson in the win, with junior Macy Curtis and sophomore Hannah Merritt.
  • Senior Cato Roell preserved the win with two saves in goal for the Wildcats.
  • Senior All-American Raegan Hickey scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for Stonehill, while classmate Claudia Crowe dished out her team-leading fifth assist – four of which have been on Hickey goals.
  • Conte's 13 goals are her second-highest total of the season to reach double-digits for the fourth time this season.

    Davidson grabbed the lead 6:06 into the game when Curtis scored her third goal of the season on a penalty corner, assisted by freshman Ava Mickel and junior Bella Worthington.
  • Conte made five of her 13 saves in a scoreless second quarter to keep Stonehill in the game.
  • Stonehill equalized 1:54 into the second half as Hickey scored off a penalty corner insertion from Crowe with the duo linking up for the fourth time this fall.
  • Pompeo's game winner came off a rebound of an initial shot by freshman Matilda Collins.
  • Merritt provided an insurance goal, scoring for the third time this season, in front of goal, assisted by sophomore Sarah Grace Clifton with 5:15 to play.
  • Stonehill pulled Conte for an extra field player with 3:32 to play but was unable to cut into the lead down the stretch.

Noteworthy

  • Hickey leads the Northeast Conference with her five goals after nine games, netting her 19th career goal in 42 career games.
  • Crowe leads the NEC with her career-best five assists, giving her 11 in 42 career games.
  • Conte surpassed 250 career saves with her 13 stops today giving her 253 stops in 25 career games, marking the 14th double-figure save performance of her career. She ranks fifth in program history for career saves with her 84 saves ranking second in the NEC.

Stonehill (1-8, 0-0 NEC) returns to action on Friday, when it opens its Northeast Conference schedule by hosting Fairfield University for its first home game of the season at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m., to open Family Weekend at the College which will be officially kicking off its 75th Anniversary Jubilee Celebration. Davidson (3-6, 0-2 A10) hosts LaSalle University on Friday at 7 p.m.
