Friars use five different goal scorers to secure victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 17, 2023) – Providence College used goals from five different players to secure a 5-0 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Lennon Family Field today.

Highlights

  • Junior Bella DelNegro led a group of five goal scorers for Providence, with a goal and assist, while freshman Florencia Talarico dished out two assists for the Friars.
  • Providence limited Stonehill to just one shot in the contest, with senior Asia Porter making one save in just under 54 scoreless minutes in goal before yielding to sophomore Zoe Onken for the final 6:19 to complete the shutout.
  • Junior Shannon Conte registered eight saves in the Stonehill cage.

How It Happened

  • Providence opened the scoring with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter as DelNegro scored her second goal of the season off a feed from the left by Talarico.
  • The Friars extended the lead to three at the half with a pair of scores in the second quarter. Freshman Bo Martina scored her second of the season off a loose ball in front of the cage with 6:31 to play in the half and then Talarico collected a Stonehill turnover and fed the ball ahead to freshman Charlotte Lorden for her first collegiate goal with 58-seconds remaining in the half.
  • The Friars added goals in the third and fourth quarters to stretch their lead, with DelNegro assisting on a goal by sophomore Mia Stilley 2:54 into the half.

Stonehill (0-7, 0-0 NEC) is back in action next weekend with a pair of games in North Carolina, starting Friday at Queens University of Charlotte at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks home opener is scheduled for Friday, September 29, when they host Fairfield University for a Northeast Conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m. Providence (4-3, 0-1 Big East) visits No. 10-ranked Liberty University for a Big East matchup on Friday at noon.
