Owls hold Skyhawks to 30-percent shooting, two post double-doubles
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 21, 2012) – Southern Connecticut State University held Stonehill College to 30-percent shooting in claiming a 59-38 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Moore Fieldhouse this afternoon.
Junior Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass./Andover) and sophomore Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y./Dewitt Clinton) each posted double-doubles to lead Southern Connecticut State to its 12th straight win. Smith-Ocran notched game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds to go with three blocked shots, two steals and two assists as she made 9-of-18 shots from the field. Fantini posted 17 points, ten rebounds (six offensive) and five steals.
Southern shot 35.5-percent (22-for-62) from the field and converted 11-of-16 (68.8%) free-throws, while making the most of Stonehill's 23 turnovers by posting a 21-10 advantage in points off turnovers. The Owls out-rebounded the Skyhawks 43-38. Stonehill was held to 30-percent (15-for-50) shooting from the field, missing all ten three point attempts, including 6-for-21 (28.6%) in the opening half.
Sophomore Asia Ewing (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) led Stonehill with her sixth double-double of the season (seventh career) with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Tori Faieta (Lynn, Mass./Saint Mary's) added six points and four rebounds, while senior Tania Williams (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward-Melville) chipped in six points and four rebounds off the bench.
Southern Connecticut never trailed, scoring six of the first seven points after a layup by Fantini 3:45 into the game. Stonehill scored the next four points to draw within one (6-5) following a basket by Williams at the 15:26 mark, but the Owls closed out the half on a 17-2 run to take a 16 point lead (32-16) at halftime. Fantini and Smith-Ocran both netted six points during the final 6:57 of the frame, while holding the Skyhawks to just one field goal in the closing stretch.
Southern outscored Stonehill 15-6 over the first 9:24 of the second half to extend its lead to 25 (47-22) after three free-throws by senior Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) with 11:36 remaining. Stonehill drew within 16 (52-36) after a jumper by senior Priscilla Dodoo (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) with 4:39 to play, but the Skyhawks would get no closer as that would prove to be the visitor's final field goal of the afternoon.
Stonehill (8-9, 4-9 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Adelphi University for a Northeast-10 clash at 5:30 p.m. There will be an Alumni reception in the Campbell Lounge of the Center for Recreation and Sport from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, January 28, to host Pace University at 1:30 p.m. Former Stonehill standout Nancy Smith will be formally inducted into the Northeast-10 Hall of Fame during a ceremony at halftime. Southern Connecticut (14-3, 11-2 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
