Greyhounds close game out with 12-4 run over final 4:23

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 11, 2012) – Assumption College, ranked 20th in this week's ESPN/USA Today/Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) Division II poll, outscored Stonehill College 12-4 over the final 4:23 to claim a 71-66 victory in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at Laska Gymnasium tonight.

Junior Gabrielle Gibson (Amityville, N.Y./Copiage) led four Assumption players in double-figures with a game-high 22 points as she made 8-of-12 shots from the field, including 1-for-3 from three-point range, while converting 5-of-6 free-throws to go with four rebounds. Senior Kelly Meredith (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) added 16 points and six rebounds, while junior Katy Howard (Medway, Mass./Medway) posted 12 points and six assists. Junior Sabrina Siciliano (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) rounded out the Greyhounds double-figure scorers with ten points (all first half), a team-high nine rebounds and three steals.

Sophomore Mary Louise Dixon (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) led the way for Stonehill with 17 points (13 first half) on 6-for-13 shooting from the field, including 3-for-6 from three-point range, while converting both free-throw attempts to go with six rebounds, four assists and a steal. Classmate Asia Ewing (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) posted her third double-double of the season (fourth career) as she added ten points and a game-high ten rebounds with two assists and two steals. Freshman Amy Pelletier (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) totaled 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, including 2-for-5 from three-point range, converting both free-throw attempts, while classmate Tori Faieta (Lynn, Mass./Saint Mary's) chipped in ten points on 5-of-10 shooting in 11 minutes.

Both teams shot 50-percent or better in the first half, with Assumption taking a two point lead (42-40) into halftime after hitting 57.1-percent (16-for-28) if its shots from the field, including 3-for-6 beyond the three point arc, and finished the game shooting 47.1-percent (24-51) from the floor while converting 20-of-27 (74.1%) free-throws. Stonehill finished shooting 42.9% (24-56) from the field, including 7-for-14 (50%) from beyond the arc, after hitting 50% (14-28) in the opening half, including 6-for-9 (66.7%) from deep. The Skyhawks converted 11-of-14 (78.6%) free-throws for the contest.

Assumption outscored Stonehill 12-4 over the final 4:23, despite not making a field goal over the last 3:39, to clinch the victory and snap a two-game skid. Stonehill had regained a three-point cushion (62-59) after a layup by senior Priscilla Dodoo (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) capped a 6-0 spurt over a two minute span.

Meredith put Assumption back in front (63-62) with a pair of free-throws with 2:38 remaining, but Dodoo answered with a layup to put Stonehill back in front. The Greyhounds canned all ten free-throw attempts in the final two and a half minutes, while the Skyhawks missed a three-pointer with four seconds left to force overtime.

Stonehill jumped out early and held a pair of five point leads in the opening four minutes. Assumption used a 12-3 run to take a four point lead (16-12) after two free-throws by sophomore Tafanie Roye (New Britain, Conn./Capital Prep Magnet) with 12:24 left in the half. The Skyhawks responded with a 13-4 run to regain a five point edge (25-20) after a Pelletier three-pointer with 8:50 left. The Greyhounds forced four ties over the final 4:28, before taking the lead at halftime (42-40) after a Howard three-pointer with four seconds left.

Neither team led by more than five points in the contest, with the second half played tight until the series of runs over the final ten minutes that produced the final outcome.

Stonehill (7-7, 3-7 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Le Moyne College at Merkert Gymnasium at 1:30 p.m. Assumption (11-3, 8-2 NE-10) visits Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
