Skyhawks win eight events to capture team title, led by record-setting performances from Fullerton and Thomas

EASTON, Mass. (April 23, 2010) – The Stonehill College men’s outdoor track and field team captured the team title at its home Skyhawk Invitational on a record-setting day at W.B. Mason Stadium this evening. The Skyhawks won eight individual events in compiling 169.50 points to out-distance the field by over 20 points.

Bentley University took second with 149 points, while Boston University was third (142.50), Northeastern University fourth (60) and Boston College fifth (56).

Junior Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) won the 1500-meter run with a facility and event-record time of 3:51.53 – shattering the previous mark of 3:59.76 set by Stonehill’s Kevin Gill at the 2008 Skyhawk Invitational. Freshman Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) finished seventh in the event with a time of 4:05.53, while classmate Timothy Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) was ninth in 4:08.77 and junior Daniel Fidler (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) was 11th in 4:10.00.

Freshman Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) broke the school-record in the 110-meter hurdles for the fourth-straight with his NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14.39-seconds. He surpassed his previous school-record of 14.72 by 0.33-seconds set last weekend at the Larry Ellis Invitational and also shattered the event and facility record of 14.86-seconds set by Howard Powell of Wheaton College in 2008.


Freshman Corey Thomas provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 110-meter hurdles, smashing program, event and facility records in the process while also winning the high jump.

Thomas also won the high jump with a leap of 6’08.75 inches, edging senior teammate Joseph D’Agostino (Canton, Mass./Canton) who posted a height of 6’06.75”. Thomas’ height is also a new facility and event record, breaking the previous record of 6’6” held by three high jumpers, including D’Agostino.

Freshman John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) won the javelin throw with an event and facility-record throw of 178’08. Senior Tom Kilby (Fall River, Mass./BMC Durfee) was second with a distance of 172’00, while Dan Kincade finished fourth at 165’09”. Gelcius was also tenth in the hammer throw in 109’00”, while Kincade was third in the hammer throw with a distance of 151’00”.

Freshman Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) posted a first-place finish for the pole vault with his leap of 13’05.25-inches. Classmate Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) finished fifth at 12’05.50”

Stonehill won both the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays on the night. The Skyhawks posted a time of 3:28.69 in the 4x400 to win their head-to-head matchup with Boston University (3:28.87). The Skyhawks posted a time of 8:19.07 in an uncontested 4x800 race.

Other highlights for Stonehill include:

Sophomore Pak Lul (Portland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) turned in a second-place finish for the 400-meter dash in 49.75-seconds.

Sophomore John Driscoll (Revere, Mass./Revere) and freshman Michael Miela (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Trabuco Hills) finished back-to-back in second and third, respectively for the 400-meter hurdles. Driscoll clocked a time of 57.16-seconds, while Miela finished in 58.01.

Junior Daniel Newton (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) finished third for the shot put with a throw of 59’06.75.” He also posted a sixth-place finish in the discus with a distance of 124’06”.

Junior Mark White (Milton, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 41’07.00. White also turned in a fourth place finish in the discus with his toss of 133’03.

Freshman Colin Prior (Georgetown, Mass./St. John’s Prep) placed third in the 100-meter dash in 11.70-seconds. He was also fifth in the 200-meter dash in 23.49-seconds.

Freshman Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John’s Prep) was one of four runners to break the W.B. Mason Stadium record for the 800-meter run as he posted a fourth-place finish in 1:53.87. Bentley’s Dan Darcy won the event with a record time of 1:52.11. The facility and event record was 1:56.39, set by Jeremy Zagorski from Boston College at the 2008 Skyhawk Invitational. Junior Nicholas Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Bishop Feehan) placed 11th in the 800 in 1:59.80.

Sophomore Corey Donahoe (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) finished seventh in the 5000-meter run in 15:42.29, while freshman Frank O’Brien (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) was 11th in 16:36.88.

Stonehill is back in action on Sunday, when it participates in the Brown University Springtime Invitational, in Providence, all day. Stonehill will also host the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium next Saturday, May 1, starting at 9 a.m.
