Thomas leads list of five event winners for Skyhawks with two record-breaking performances in outdoor debut following All-America indoor season

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (April 4, 2010) – The Stonehill College men’s outdoor track and field team had a dominant day at the Bryant University Invitational on Saturday. The Skyhawks came away with five individual event winners and saw three school records fall.

Freshman Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High), an indoor All-American in the high jump,  led Stonehill in his outdoor collegiate debut by winning the 110-meter high hurdles with a school-record time of 14.80-seconds - over a half second faster than second place (15.48). He broke the previous school record of 15.08-seconds set by Dana Burbank at the New England Championships at Dartmouth College on May 11, 2007.

Thomas provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in May for the high jump with his school-record leap of 6’09.50” to place second at the event. Stonehill’s indoor school-record holder for both the 55-meter high hurdles and high jump, broke the previous outdoor record of 6’6” set by Matt Carroll at the 2003 Northeast-10 Conference Championships, hosted by Bryant, and matched by Burbank at UMass Lowell’s George Davis Invitational in 2006 and senior teammate Joseph D’Agostino (Canton, Mass./Canton) at the 2007 Bryant Invitational.


Kevin McCann

Freshmen Kevin McCann (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Luke Byrnes (Glen Head, N.Y./Chaminade) both cleared a new school-record height of 13’06.00” to finish first and second, respectively in the pole vault. The pair also share the school’s indoor pole vault record.

Stonehill claimed the top two spots in the 1500-meter run and placed three in the top ten and all six entries in the top 16. Junior Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) won the event in 1:55.35, followed closely by freshman Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John’s Prep) in second with a time of 1:55.60, while junior Nicholas Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Bishop Feehan) was tenth in 2:01.01. Three freshmen rounded out the Skyhawks in the event with Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) in 12th in 2:01.68, Ryan Coene (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) in 13th in 2:02.04 and Daniel Padilla (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) in 16th in 2:05.04.

Senior Daniel Pilz (Newington, Conn./Newington) won the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.19.

Juniors Mark White (Milton, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and Daniel Newton (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) placed first and second, respectively, in the discus. White threw 137’07”, while Newton reached a distance of 130’08”.

Newton also placed second in the shot put with a distance of 43’09.25”, while White was seventh with a throw of 38’11.00”.


Daniel Pilz

Stonehill’s 4x400-meter relay team was second in 3:28.47. Running for the Skyhawks were junior Nathan Morse (Whitinsville, Mass./Holy Name), sophomores John Driscoll (Revere, Mass./Revere) and Pak Lul (Portland, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) and freshman Michael Miela (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Trabuco Hills).

Lul also placed second in the 400-meter dash in 49.56, while Morse finished eighth in 51.99. Driscoll finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.04, while Miela was seventh in 59.79.

Other highlights for Stonehill include:

Stonehill placed two runners in the top five, three in the top ten and all four competitors entered in the 1500-meter run in the top 12. Junior Daniel Fidler (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) placed second with a time of 4:04.49, while freshman Todd Sather (Melville, N.Y./Saint Anthony’s) was fourth in 4:08.50. Freshman Tim Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) was sixth overall in 4:11.79, while classmate Frank O’Brien (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) was 12th with a time of 4:43.97.


Mark White

Sophomore Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) led three Stonehill runners in the 5000-meter run with a time of 15:43.55 to place second overall. Freshman Ethan Penny (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) was seventh 16:09.49, while sophomore Corey Donahoe (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) was tenth in 16:27.14.

Sophomore Daniel Kincade (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) was second in the hammer throw with a distance of 142’07”.

Freshman John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) was fifth in the javelin with a distance of 173’07”, to go with a sixth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 39’07.75”

Senior Tom Kilby (Fall River, Mass./BMC Durfee) placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 176’04”.

Freshman Colin Prior (Georgetown, Mass./St. John’s Prep) was 11th in the long jump with a distance of 18’05.25”. He also placed 12th in the 200-meter dash in 24.00-seconds and 13th for the 100-meter dash in 11.75-seconds.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday for the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
