DEDHAM, Mass. (May 8, 2010) – Freshman Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) continues to re-write the Stonehill College record books by becoming the College’s first athlete to win multiple New England Championships at the same meet to highlight second day action at the 2010 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Northeastern University, at Solomon Stadium today.

Thomas, an indoor All-American for the high jump, won both the 110-meter hurdles and high jump New England Championships. He automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships later this month with his championship-winning and school-record high jump of 7’0.5” – matching the second-best height in all of Division II so far this spring. Thomas also won the indoor New England high jump title in February with a Division II best jump of 7’2.25”.

Thomas opened the day by winning the 110-meter hurdles crown with his time of 14.58-seconds, topping Brian Alexander from the University of Rhode Island by .23-seconds. Thomas qualified for the final with a run of 14.42-seconds on Friday.

Junior Patrick Fullerton (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) took All-New England honors in the 1500-meter run with his fourth-place finish in 3:49.27. He broke his own school record of 3:49.95 set at last weekend’s Northeast-10 Championships and bettering his provisional NCAA Championship qualifying credentials.

Freshman Sean Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./St. John’s Prep) earned All-New England honors for the 800-meter run with his fifth-place finish (out of 28 runners) in 1:53.24 – less than a quarter of a second shy of the provisional NCAA Championship qualifying mark.

Fullerton and Hanlon both also collected All-New England honors as part of Stonehill’s 4x800-meter relay team that placed seventh in 7:48.20. Also running for the Skyhawks were junior Nick Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and freshman Sam Spencer (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk).

Stonehill, which placed seventh as a team at the Championships (out of 29 teams) with 35 points, had nine All-New England performances over the two days of the event. Senior Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial) earned All-New England status on Friday with a fifth place finish out of 31 runners in the 10,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 31:39.05.

Other results for the Skyhawks on Saturday included:

Senior Joe D’Agostino (Canton, Mass./Canton) placed 11th in the high jump with a leap of 6’02.75”.

Freshman Ethan Penney (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) finished 14th (out of 25 competitors) in the 3000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:37.05.

Junior Daniel Newton (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) placed 15th in the shot put with his throw of 46’00.5”

Junior Daniel Pilz (Newington, Conn./Newington) placed 16th in the 1500-meter run in 3:55.64.

Junior Mark White (Milton, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) placed 22nd in the discus throw with a distance of 125’01”.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday for the New Balance High Performance Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, starting at 4 p.m.
