Skyhawks ride 14 three-pointers to win as Smith and Logan combine for 47 points
WALTHAM, Mass. (February 22, 2014) – Stonehill College buried 14 three-pointers and turned the ball over just eight times in claiming a 97-83 triumph over rival Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at the Dana Athletic Center this afternoon.
Sophomore Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and freshman Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) combined for 47 points to lead four Stonehill players in double figures as Smith and junior Jack Cole (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) both contributed double-doubles in the win. Smith posted his first career double-double to lead the way for the Skyhawks with a career-high 25 points and career-best ten assists with no turnovers to go with three rebounds and a steal as he made 7-of-12 shots from the field, including 3-for-7 from three-point range, while converting all eight free-throw attempts on the afternoon. Logan netted 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, while converting all five of his free-throws to go with eight rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
Cole posted his fifth double-double of the season (15th career) with 19 points and ten rebounds as he made all eight of his shots from the field, including a three-pointer, while converting 2-of-3 free-throws. Sophomore Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio/Kenston) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds off the bench for the Skyhawks, while classmate Adam Bramanti (Middleton, Mass./Masconomet Regional) chipped in 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range and three assists.
Sophomore Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills) led four Bentley players in double figures with 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds to go with two assists as he finished shooting 7-for-18 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Senior Jasper Grassa (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical) also netted 18 points as he buried 4-of-8 three-pointers and converted 6-of-7 free-throws to go with two rebounds and two assists. Junior Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) added 13 points, eight rebounds (five offensive) and three assists, while sophomore Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells) posted ten points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, six assists and four boards.

Stonehill shot 47.8-percent (32-for-67) from the field overall, including 14-for-31 (45.2%) from long distance, while converting 19-of-22 (86.4%) free-throws. The Skyhawks held a 44-35 rebounding advantage and outscored Bentley 12-4 in points off turnovers despite both teams taking care of the ball with a combined 17 miscues. The Falcons finished shooting 43.3% (29-67) from the floor, including 11-for-26 (42.4%) from three, converting 14-of-17 (82.4%) free-throws. Bentley shot 41.7% (15-36) in the second half.
Bentley held an 11 point lead (29-18) with 7:34 remaining in the first half after sophomore Shaq Phelps (Linden, N.J./Linden) scored eight straight points to cap a 13-3 run. Stonehill outscored the Falcons 26-9 over the final 6:27 of the half to carry a six point (46-40) lead into halftime. Bramanti capped a 10-2 run that pulled the Skyhawks within a point (36-35) after a three-pointer with 2:33 remaining before Bentley pushed its lead back to three with a pair of free-throws by freshman Ferguson Duke (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Hun School (N.J.)). Stonehill scored the next nine points to take the lead and push it to six (44-38) with 56-seconds left after three-straight triples from Smith, Bramanti and Cumpstone.
Bramanti regained Stonehill's six point lead (49-43) with a three-pointer in the opening minute of the second half and the teams traded baskets before Bentley closed within a point (53-52) after a McFarland three with 16:07 to play. The Skyhawks wouldn't relinquish the lead and after a back and forth stretch they were able to push the lead to six (73-67) after a Smith layup with 8:59 to play.
Bentley was back within three (76-73) after another McFarland triple with 6:41 to play and down just four (79-75) after a pair of Grassa free-throw with 5:33 on the clock. Stonehill took over from there, scoring eight straight points over the next four plus minutes to extend its lead into double-figures (87-75) after a pair of Smith free-throws with 1:16 remaining. Smith made eight free-throws over the final 1:16, and scored ten points overall, to help seal the win for the Skyhawks.
Stonehill (8-17, 5-15 NE-10) returns home to close out its 2013-14 season with a Senior Night matchup with Saint Anselm College in Merkert Gymnasium on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Bentley (16-10, 10-10 NE-10) hosts Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
