Stonehill Football Earns NE-10 Sportsmanship Award

Program recognized for first time, earning College's ninth award overall

EASTON, Mass. (January 4, 2010) - The Stonehill College football team has earned the Northeast-10 Conference's Sportsmanship Award for its sport, the league office announced recently.

It marks the first time Stonehill's football team has received the award in the fourth season of its existence. The College has now earned nine team awards with the football team joining men's soccer (2007 & 2008), women's outdoor track & field (2007 & 2008), ice hockey (2007-08 & 2008-09), women's indoor track & field (2008-09) and men's tennis (2009). Stonehill received the David R. Brunk Award honoring institutional sportsmanship for 2007-08.

The awards program, which honors one team from each of the conference's 23 championship sports that has exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and generally conducted themselves with a higher degree of integrity, character and class. The awards are decided upon by a vote of each of the conference teams head coach, team captain and Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative in their respective sports.

Stonehill, under the direction of third-year head coach Robert Talley, finished its season with a 5-5 record overall, 4-4 in the Northeast-10 to finish tied for fifth in the Conference standings. The Skyhawks won their last three games, and four of their last five overall, including a dramatic 23-21 triumph over then 24th-ranked and rivals Bentley University in the season finale. A program-record matching six Skyhawks earned All-Northeast-10 honors this fall with four earning first team honors, including sophomore return specialist/cornerback Stephan Neville (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) earning first team honors at two positions.
