Gaines Earns Second-Straight NE-10 Freshman of the Week Award

Lumberton, N.J., native collects award after scoring first career touchdown

EASTON, Mass. (October 19, 2009) - Stonehill College defensive back Jareed Gaines (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was named the Northeast-10 Conference's Freshman of the Week for football by the league office this afternoon.

Gaines earns the award for the second-straight week after totaling six tackles (three solo) with a sack, pass break up and fumble recovery for Stonehill at Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday. He recovered the fumble on the Owls first offensive play from scrimmage and raced 30-yards for his first collegiate touchdown to give the Skyhawks a 7-0 lead 2:47 into the contest.

Gaines has appeared in all seven games in his first collegiate season for Stonehill. He has totaled 26 tackles (12 solo), with 2.0 sacks for a loss of eight yards and the one pass break up and fumble recovery. He earned Freshman of the Week honors last Monday after he totaled a team and season-high 13 stops (seven solo) with his first career sack in the Skyhawks' 34-14 win over Pace University that previous Saturday.

Stonehill (2-5, 1-4 NE-10) looks to bounce back from its setback at Southern Connecticut this Saturday when it hosts Saint Anselm College at W.B. Mason Stadium as part of Alumni Weekend at 1 p.m.
