Stonehill Takes Third at the NE-10 Championships

BOSTON, Mass. (February 16, 2013) – The Stonehill Skyhawks women's track and field team placed third in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Saturday night at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Mass.

The Skyhawks scored 101 points to finish third overall behind the University of Massachusetts Lowell (216 points) and American International College (123). Stonehill placed ahead of the University of New Haven (96) and Southern Connecticut State University (41) who rounded out the top-five.

The 4x800 relay team consisting of Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J.), Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass.) , Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass), and Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn.) turned in a first place finish in a time of 9:40.00, beating Adelphi's relay team by more than seven seconds. Hellman led it off for the team with 2:24 leg, followed by Rielly's 2:23 leg, Ulcena came next in 2:26 and Wilson finished it off in 2:23.

Sophomore Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine) broke the school record in the 500-meter race and placed third. Curit notched a time of 1:15.53 which broke her previous school record of 1:16.38 that she recorded earlier this season at the UMass Boston Invitational. Curit also posted a sixth place finish in the long jump, measuring in at 17-01.50.

Three Skyhawks finished in the top six during the 3000-meter run. Juniors Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn.) and Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn.) placed second and third, while Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass.) placed sixth. In all, the trio added 18 points for Stonehill. Bishop earned a time of 10:37.83 while Regan crossed the finish line in 10:44.16 and Venturo clocked in at 10:53.07. For her efforts, Bishop earned All-Conference honors.

The distance medley relay team recorded a second place finish in 13:02.51. Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass.) ran the 1200-meter leg in 4:01.3, the 400-meter leg was run by Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass.) in 61.4 seconds, following her was Anderson who ran the 800-meter leg in 2:30.2 and Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn.) completed the mile in 5:27.4. 

Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass.) and Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass.) also notched second and third place finishes for the Skyhawks in the 5000-meter race. McBride registered a season-best time of 17:57.07 and Regan finished in 18:21.10 to earn third. McBride earned All-Conference recognition for her performance.

Two Stonehill athletes registered points in the 800-meter run with Wilson placing fourth and Ulcena earning sixth. Wilson clocked in at 2:21.66 while Ulcena finished at 2:23.94, adding five and four points for the Skyhawks.

Freshman Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y.) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles to earn four points for the Skyhawks. Esernio registered a 9.24 time in the finals after tying a school record with a 9.21 time in qualifying.


Caroline McBride took second place for the Skyhawks in the 5000-meter race.

Freshman Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I.) led the 4x400 relay team to a third place finish. The team consisting of Gray, Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass.), Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt.), and Curit earned a 3:59.70 time. Gray started it off with a 58.8 first leg, Hanlon ran the second part in 61.4, Polakowski followed in 61.4, while Curit finished it off in 57.8 seconds.

Junior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y.) tied a school record and finished third overall in the pole vault event. Olin measured in at 10-00.00 feet, tying the school record that she set earlier this year at Northeastern University's Joe Donahue Games.

Freshman thrower Adrienne Thornton (Dorchester, Mass.) placed third in the weight throw. The reigning NE-10 Field Rookie and Athlete of the Week launched a 49-00.75 toss to capture six points for the Skyhawks.

Other Notable Finishes:

Rielly finished sixth and Veit placed eighth in the mile run for the Skyhawks. Rielly ran in 5:18.52 and Veit earned a 5:23.50 time for Stonehill as the pair totaled four points in the event.

Stonehill received four more points in the 1000-meter race when LaRegina and Hellman finished sixth and eighth respectively. LaRegina recorded a 3:04.23 time, while Hellman timed in at 3:09.34.

Gray also captured sixth place for the Skyhawks in the 400-meter race. The freshman recorded a season-best time of 57.82 to earn three points for Stonehill.

Stonehill will compete next Friday and Saturday at the New England Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the Boston University Terriers.
