Stonehill Picked Second for Saturday’s NE-10 Indoor Track & Field Championships

Skyhawks ranked fifth in USTFCCCA East Regional rankings

NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

EASTON, Mass. (February 15, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team, ranked fifth in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional Rankings, opens its championship season on Saturday night with the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, Mass., starting at 4 p.m.

Stonehill has been picked second in the Northeast-10's pre-championship coaches' poll released today. The Skyhawks received two of the 11 first place votes and 87 points to rank behind rival UMass Lowell who collected seven first place votes and 96 points. American International College is picked third with 80 points and one first place vote, while Southern Connecticut State University has been picked fourth with 76 points and the remaining first place vote.

Stonehill placed second in last season's NE-10 Championship meet with 138 points, behind UMass Lowell who captured the conference title with a 171 point effort. Following Stonehill was Southern Connecticut State in third with 106 points, with American International fourth (97.5 points).

Stonehill has turned in a second place finish this winter at Brandeis University's Reggie Poyau Invitational in December as well as a third place team showing at the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Invitational in January.

Freshman Adrienne Thornton (Dorchester, Mass./John D. O'Bryant), a five-time NE-10 Field Rookie of the Week winner, makes her NE-10 Championships debut seeded first in the weight throw. Thornton broke the school record earlier this season with a distance of 52-feet, 5.50-inches at the URI Sorlien Invitational. The freshman is also seeded seventh for the shot put tomorrow night.

Sophomore Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) will also factor heavily in the scoring for Stonehill. She currently holds the best 500-meter time in the NE-10 this season at 1:16.38, which she recorded at the UMass Boston Invitational in December. Curit also ranks sixth among NE-10 long jumpers, recording a season-long measurement of 17-feet, 2.25-inches at the URI Coaches Tribute Invitational. The sophomore has also played a major part in the success of both the 4x400 and 4000-meter distance medley relay teams.

Freshman Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Warwick) is seeded seventh among NE-10 competitors in the tightly contested 400-meter race. Gray earned NE-10 Track Rookie of the Week honors following her second place finish in the 400-meter race at the URI Coaches Tribute Invitational. The freshman sprinter has also contributed to the success of the 4x400 relay team that is seeded third among NE-10 teams.

Junior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) is seeded fourth in the pole vault tomorrow night. The junior posted a school-record measurement of 10-feet even at the Joe Donahue Games, besting the previous school record of 9-6.25 that she recorded at the Reggie Poyau Invitational earlier this season.

Junior Emily Regan (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) is seeded second for the 5000-meter run, having earned a personal-best time of 18:06.93 at the UMass Boston Invitational.

Sophomore Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) owns the fifth best 800-meter run time (2:20.85). Wilson has also helped the distance medley relay team provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships when the team recorded a 12:19:08 time at the Tufts University Cupid Challenge on Monday. The time currently ranks second in the NE-10 this season.

Sophomore Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) leads two runners seeded in the top-three in the NE-10 for the 3000-meter run. She placed second in a season-best time of 10:19.85 at the UMass Boston Invitational (12/1/13). Junior Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) is seeded third with a season-best time of 10:40.95 at the URI Sorlien Invitational earlier this season. 

Other Stonehill Athletes to Watch:

Junior Marissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) is seeded seventh in the 800-meter race heading into the NE-10 Championships. Ulcena registered a 2:23.56 time at the Tufts University Cupid Challenge. The junior could also participate in the 4x800 relay team that is seeded second overall in the NE-10.

Junior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) ranks fourth in the NE-10 in the 1000-meter run. LaRegina recorded a season-best time of 3:05.41 at the URI Sorlien Invitational (1/19/13). The junior also played a major part in the distance medley relay team provisionally qualifying for the NCAA.

Senior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) owns the seventh best time in the NE-10 this season in the one mile run. The senior will also race in the distance medley relay for Stonehill, which is seeded second in the NE-10.

Sophomore Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) is seeded in the top-eight in the mile race. Rielly posted a season-best time 5:22.61 at the URI Coaches Tribute Invitational (2/2/13).

Junior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) is seeded in the top-eight in two separate events heading into the NE-10 Championships. Comei will compete in both the long jump and the triple jump events Saturday. She posted season-bests of 16-07.75 feet in the long jump and 35-02.00 feet in the triple jump at the Reggie Poyau Invitational (12/7/12). 

Next weekend, Stonehill's qualifiers will compete at the New England Championships, hosted by Boston University, at the BU Track and Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23.
