Women's Tennis Earns ITA Academic Honors

EASTON, Mass. (July 26, 2021) – The Stonehill College women's tennis program has been recognized for its efforts in the classroom with All-Academic Team status from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the third-straight year, while a program-record matching six Skyhawks earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the second-straight year.

Stonehill earns ITA All-Academic Team status for the third straight year and fourth time overall after recording a team cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2020-21 academic year. The Skyhawks are among 104 NCAA Division II institutions to earn All-Academic status from the ITA, including one of four from the Northeast-10 Conference. Additionally, for the second-straight year, a program-record matching six from the Stonehill team have earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for having a grade point average of 3.50 or higher over the academic year, which is among 711 in Division II overall, including 27 from the NE10, matching the program-best total set in 2015-16 and in 2019-20.

Earning ITA Scholar-Athlete honors from Stonehill is recent graduate Isabelle Porter, juniors Emma Markaryan and Samantha Ormesher, along with sophomores Steffi Antao, Taylor Colbert and Laura Jaegerhuber. Ormesher earns ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the third-straight year, while Markaryan earns the recognition for the second-straight year and the remaining four collect the honor for the first time.

Porter, who graduated this May with a bachelor's degree as a biology major, caps her four-year Stonehill career with ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the first time. She received the Division II Athletic Director's Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award as a junior and has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll three semesters, with Academic Distinction status each semester with a GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, and Athletic Director's Honor Roll three semesters as well.

Porter, a four-time All-NE10 performer over her career, finished her four years with a combined singles and doubles record of 75-42, posting a 38-20 career singles mark (21-6 NE10) and 37-22 career doubles record (17-7 NE10). She was named to the NE10 All-Championship Team this spring in helping lead the Skyhawks to the NE10 Championship match for the seventh-straight year, to go with All-NE10 third team honors at No. 2 doubles with Ormesher. Porter was an NE10 All-Rookie Team selection as a freshman when she was also an All-NE10 first team performer at No. 3 singles and earned her first Oracle/ITA Division II East Regional ranking. She also reached the USTA/ITA Division II East Region Doubles Quarterfinals twice, with a semifinal appearance as a freshman, advancing to the singles quarterfinals as a sophomore.

Ormesher, who has earned a 3.76 cumulative grade point average as a biology major at Stonehill, also earns ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the third time after being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District® At Large first team earlier this month. The two-time NE10 Academic All-Conference selection was recognized with the NE10's Elite 24 Award at this spring's women's tennis championship for having the highest cumulative GPA among all championship match participants and received the College's Saint Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, Medal for having the highest cumulative GPA on the women's tennis team earlier this spring as well. She has received the Division II Athletic Director's Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award twice and been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll all six semesters at the College to date. Ormesher was selected to Stonehill's Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program, where she and a classmate are working this summer with Bronwyn Bleakley, Associate Professor of Biology, to investigate the Physiology of friendship: "How do guppies become familiar enough to cooperate?"

Ormesher is a five-time All-NE10 performer over the course of her career at Stonehill, earning All-NE10 third team honors at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles this spring. She finished the season with a 15-7 combined record in singles and doubles play, posting a 7-2 singles mark (5-1 NE10) and 8-5 doubles mark (7-2 NE10). Ormesher was a first team All-NE10 performer at No. 3 singles as a freshman when she was also the Most Outstanding Player of the 2018 NE10 Championships and NE10 All-Rookie Team pick. She enters her senior year with a career combined record of 54-32, including a 27-14 singles record (19-6 NE10) and 27-18 doubles mark (23-7 NE10).

Markaryan, who has earned a 3.49 cumulative grade point average as an English major at Stonehill, earns ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the second time. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all six semesters to date, with Academic Distinction status the last four terms for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, with Athletic Director's Honor Roll all six semesters as well, while receiving the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award for the first time after her sophomore year. She has been named a Diversity Representative on Stonehill's Student Government Association and is a Writing Tutor at the College's Center for Writing and Academic Achievement.

Markaryan is a four-time All-NE10 performer over her career, with first team honors three times after collecting the status at No. 3 doubles with sophomore Lily Peter to go with third team honors at No. 4 singles this spring. She has been named to the NE10 All-Championship team two times and was an NE10 All-Rookie Team performer as a freshman. Markaryan finished her junior season with a 15-6 combined record in singles and doubles play, including a 10-2 singles mark (7-1 NE10) to go with a 5-4 doubles mark (4-1 NE10). She is a combined 46-17 in singles and doubles play over her career, including a 37-10 singles (26-2 NE10) record and 9-7 doubles mark (7-1 NE10).

Antao, who has earned a 3.60 cumulative GPA as a biology major at Stonehill, earns ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the first time in her career. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all four semesters, with Academic Distinction status the last three terms for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, while being named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll all four semesters as well.

Antao is ranked No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings, while she and classmate Cristina Solorzano Valencia are ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/ITA East Region doubles rankings. She is a two-time All-NE10 performer and was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman. Antao finished her sophomore season with a 15-7 combined singles and doubles record, posting a 6-4 singles mark (4-2 NE10) and 9-3 doubles clip (7-3 NE10). She enters her junior season with a career combined record of 36-14, posting a 17-8 singles mark (13-2 NE10) and 19-6 doubles record (11-4 NE10).

Colbert, a political science major at Stonehill, earns ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the first time after joining the Skyhawks as a walk-on this spring. She was also named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll, with Academic Distinction status for having a GPA between 3.50 and 3.99 this spring, as well as the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Colbert is also a member of the College's Army ROTC program.

Jaegerhuber, a management major with a 3.53 cumulative GPA, earns ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the first time as well. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all four semesters, with Academic Distinction status the last three terms for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, while being named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll all four semesters as well. Jaegerhuber, who opted out of the 2020-21 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, posted a 4-2 combined record in singles and doubles play as a freshman, including a 3-1 singles mark – all in NE10 play.

Stonehill women's tennis finished the spring season ranked No. 2 in the final ITA Division II East Region rankings, having posted an 11-4 record overall, including 8-2 in the NE10. The Skyhawks reached the NE10 Championship match for the seventh-straight year and 14th time in program history this spring, earning their 15th NCAA Tournament bid. Stonehill knocked off No. 28 nationally ranked and top-seeded Concordia (N.Y.) College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament (4-3) before falling in the regional championship match.
