Women's Tennis Bounces Back at New Haven, 4-1

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (March 25, 2021) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 8 in this week's Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, bounced back from just its second Conference loss in five years with a key 4-1 triumph over the University of New Haven, ranked No. 9 in the region, in a Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis matchup of regionally-ranked programs at UNH Tennis Courts this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Juniors Emma Markaryan and Samantha Ormesher led Stonehill to the win as double-winners on the afternoon. Markaryan and sophomore Lily Peter won at No. 3 doubles, before she added a win at No. 3 singles. Ormesher and senior Isabelle Porter posted a win at No. 2 doubles, before Ormesher notched a victory at No. 5 singles.
  • Sophomore Steffi Antao also earned a singles win for the Skyhawks.
  • Senior Lilia Rodriguez earned New Haven's point with her 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 decision at No. 6 singles over Peter.

How it Happened

  • Markaryan and Peter clinched the doubles point for Stonehill with their 7-5 decision at No. 3 doubles over New Haven's Rodriguez and sophomore Alexa Orlando.
  • That win, coupled by Ormesher and Porter's 6-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles gave Stonehill the 2-1 edge in doubles play for the first point of the match.
  • Ormesher added a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles over New Haven freshman Anna Katz, while Markaryan picked up a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 3 against junior Nicole Mika.

  • Antao clinched the win for the Skyhawks with her triumph at No. 2 singles.
    Antao provided the match clinching point for Stonehill, battling past senior Stephanie Gonzalez at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

  • Stonehill sophomore Cristina Solarzano Valencia is ranked No. 6 in the most recent Oracle/ITA Division II East Region Singles Rankings.

Stonehill (2-1, 2-1 NE10) returns to the courts on Sunday, when it hosts Adelphi University, ranked No. 4 in this week's Oracle/ITA East Region rankings, in another regionally-ranked clash at the Wimbledon 109 Tennis Club in Walpole, Massachusetts, at 2 p.m. Spectators will not be permitted to attend by Stonehill, NE10 and Tennis Club policies.
