Stonehill Finishes Sixth at New England Tennis Championships

Martin and Skyhawks top doubles team turn in fourth place finishes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 15, 2012) – Stonehill College rounded out its fall schedule with a sixth place finish at the New England Women's Tennis Championships, hosted by Providence College and Bryant University, this weekend.

Stonehill was the only non-Division I program in the eight team field and compiled 11 points at the event with six singles and three doubles flight brackets. Two points were awarded for each championship bracket win and one point for wins in the consolation bracket. Host Providence College won the event with 46 points, with the University of Connecticut finishing second with 36. The Skyhawks finished ahead of Division I members Fairfield University (6 points) and the University of Hartford (3).

Junior Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) led Stonehill with a fourth place finish in the No. 6 singles bracket, falling to Rhode Island freshman Lauren Benoit in the third place match, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Martin defeated Hartford sophomore Christie Greenberg, 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual flight champion freshman Hannah Zangari from Providence, 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals.

Stonehill's top doubles pairing of senior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and freshman Bailey Paradiso (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) placed fourth in the No. 1 doubles bracket. The duo opened with an 8-6 victory over a team from Fairfield in the quarterfinals before being halted by the eventual winners from Providence, 8-2 in the semis. Sacred Heart University's top doubles team posted an 8-4 victory over Frost/Paradiso in the third place match.

Paradiso placed sixth in the top flight singles bracket. She was defeated by Sacred Heart University junior Gabi Kaldan, 6-1, 7-5, in the quarterfinals and then reached the consolation finals before being topped by Fairfield sophomore Allison Radde, 6-0, 6-1. Paradiso posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hartford senior Ashley Harel in the consolation semifinals.

Frost also placed sixth for No. 4 singles, falling to Rhode Island freshman Elizaveta Sadavnikova, 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 in a tightly contested consolation final. Frost was defeated by Providence sophomore Taylor Corder, 5-7, 6-1, 10-5 in the quarterfinals. She rebounded with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Fairfield sophomore Emma Samson in the consolation semifinals.

Senior Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) turned in a sixth place finish in the No. 3 singles bracket, falling to Bryant junior Stephanie Smyers, 6-1, 6-4 in the consolation finals. Haedrich opened with a 6-2, 6-4 setback to UConn junior Jennifer Learmonth in the quarterfinals, before rebounding for a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hartford freshman Colleen Beck in the consolation semifinals.

Freshman Analise Kump (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) placed seventh in the No. 2 singles bracket, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Fairfield junior Victoria Pirrello in the seventh place match. Kump was defeated by eventual flight champion Srna Stosljevic, a freshman from UConn, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. University of Rhode Island sophomore Kathleen Uy topped Kump in the consolation semifinals, 6-2, 2-6, 10-5.

Freshman Kirsti Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) placed seventh in the No. 5 singles bracket, posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hartford sophomore Jessica Galik in the seventh place match. Toegemann was topped by Bryant sophomore Rosie Bird, 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 in a back and forth quarterfinal match. Rhode Island sophomore Karolina Wojciak posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Toegemann in the consolation semis.

Stonehill finishes the fall season with a 7-0 overall record, including a 5-0 mark in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Skyhawks spring schedule will be released in December.
