Women's Swimming Caps Spring with Virtual Open Meet

Skyhawk relays shine with two wins, while posting eight event wins overall

EASTON, Mass. (May 17, 2021) – The Stonehill College women's swimming program closed out its spring among five programs to compete in a virtual open meet, swimming its events recently at its temporary home, the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton, Massachusetts.

Stonehill competed in the non-scoring virtual meet with Colby-Sawyer College, Elms College, Gordon College and Roger Williams University. The Skyhawks posted eight event wins, split amongst three individuals and two relay teams, out of the 15 events conducted for the meet.

Freshman Maddie Conley collected three individual first place finishes in the meet and was part of both first-place relays, while classmate Sydney Stockwell added two individual event wins and was also part of both winning relays. Freshman Katie Keating also notched an event win and was part of both first-place relays.

Conley led a Stonehill sweep of the top two positions and three of the top four overall, in a field of 14 swimmers, by winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:29.75. Keating was right behind in second in 5:39.21, while sophomore Nika Sokolova finished fourth in 5:44.14. Sophomore Maggie Timmoney also posted a top ten finish as her time of 6:17.36 was good for ninth.

Conley also led the list of 13 entries in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing first in 2:03.79. Timmoney clocked in another top ten with a ninth-place finish in 2:19.47. Conley added her third first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:31.59. Freshman Morgan Gangi took third out of eight swimmers in the event in 2:39.21.

Stockwell led a sweep of the top two positions, of a field of 11 overall, in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing first in 59.63-seconds. Sokolova took second in 1:04.03, while Gangi finished sixth in 1:07.48. Stockwell's second individual win came in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:09.49 to lead the list of nine entries by over six seconds. Sokolova finished fourth in 2:19.95.

Stonehill turned in two first place finishes in relay events after solid performances during the virtual meets earlier this spring. The Skyhawks took first out of four teams in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:26.25. Conley swam the lead leg, followed by Sokolova, Keating and Stockwell.

Stonehill also finished first out of four teams in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:10.84. Stockwell swam the opening backstroke leg, followed by Conley for the breaststroke and then Keating for the butterfly leg, before Sokolova swam the freestyle anchor leg.

Stonehill's 400-yard freestyle relay capped the three relay events in third with a time of 3:52.00, shedding seven seconds off its previous best. Conley swam the lead leg, followed by Sokolova and Keating, with Stockwell swimming the anchor.

Keating posted an event win of her own, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.03-seconds to lead the list of 23 entries in that event. Sokolova finished 11th in 58.34-seconds, while Timmoney was 16th in 1:02.34. Conley also recorded a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.97, while Gangi finished fourth in the field of ten swimmers in 1:12.19.

Stonehill took two of the top three spots out of 12 entries in the 100-yard butterfly. Stockwell finished second in 59.28-seconds, while Keating finished third in 59.78. Keating finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.16-seconds, while Sokolova was fourth in the field of 23 swimmers in 27.16-seconds. Timmoney posted another top ten, finishing tenth in the 50-free in 28.66-seconds.        

Stockwell led a trio of Stonehill swimmers in the top five of the 200-yard individual medley, finishing second in 2:15.83, while Conley finished third in 2:18.98. Gangi followed in fifth in the field of 12 in 2:23.52. Stockwell also finished third out of seven entries in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:57.53.

Stonehill will now take aim at its much awaited first official season of competition starting in the fall after seeing its scheduled start delayed by the COVID-10 pandemic.
