Women's Swimming Remains Third after Second Week of Virtual Meet

Stockwell adds another event win, while Keating adds first in 100-fly and relays continue to perform well

EASTON, Mass. (April 1, 2021) – The Stonehill College women's swimming program maintained its third place team standing after the second week of an nine team three round virtual swimming meet, competing its portion of the event at its temporary home, the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton, Massachusetts, on Saturday.

Stonehill posted a third-place team finish for the second-straight week with 203.5 points, as a result of two event wins, five top five finishes and 12 top ten finishes overall for the week, scoring points in each of the events it swam for the day. Roger Williams University led the way again in week two with 603 points, followed by Babson College (448.5 points) in second, with the Skyhawks third, 4.5 points in front of fourth place Norwich University (199), while University of Saint Joseph (92) rounds out the top five in week two.

Stonehill is in third place among the nine programs competing in the overall meet standings through 34 events after two weeks with 371.5 points, leading fourth place Norwich (327) by 44.5 points heading into the final week of the virtual meet series. Roger Williams leads the overall standings with 1,124 points, followed by Babson with 707.5.      

Freshman Sydney Stockwell sits in sixth place in the high point standings in the virtual meet after two weekends with 72.5 points – just 1.5 points shy of the top five. She added another first-place finish in a backstroke event this past weekend, to go with a 50-backstroke win in week one. Stockwell also recorded a win in the 50-yard butterfly in week one. She posted a time of 1:02.41 on Saturday to lead the field of 28 in the 100-yard backstroke, pacing two top ten and three top 15 finishes by the Skyhawks that saw all four entries in the top 20. Stockwell finished the first 50-yards in 29.81-seconds, before coming in at 32.60 over the final 50.

Sophomore Nika Sokolova finished eighth in the 100-backstroke in 1:07.66, followed by freshman Morgan Gangi in 12th in 1:09.34 and then sophomore Maggie Timmoney in 17th in 1:22.03.

Freshman Katie Keating earned her first event win of the virtual series with her time of 1:01.96 in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming a 29.07-second split on the first 50-meter leg and then came in at 32.89 over the final 50.

Stockwell and Keating also posted top-ten finishes in the 100-yard freestyle, tying for sixth out of 31 entries with identical times of 58.63-seconds. Timmoney also scored for the Skyhawks in the event with her 15th-place finish in 1:05.00.

Freshman Maddie Conley posted a top five finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing fourth out of 23 swimmers in 1:13.57. Gangi finished seventh in the event in 1:15.03.

Conley added another top ten with a seventh place finish out of 24 entries in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:46.48. Sokolova rounded out the top ten in 5:56.76.

Gangi added a second top ten performance with a ninth place finish out of 17 swimmers in the 200-yard individual medley relay in 2:30.87. She completed the opening butterfly leg in 32.50-seconds, followed by a 38.65 split in the backstroke, 43.01 for the breaststroke leg and then completed the freestyle leg in 36.71-seconds. Timmoney finished 13th in the 200IM in 2:52.16.

Stonehill's 400-yard medley relay finished third out of 11 teams in 4:21.63 after the 200-yard relay was fifth two weeks ago. Swimming for the Skyhawks in the 400 medley were Stockwell with a 1:02.52 split on the opening backstroke leg, before Conley completed the breaststroke leg in 1:15.26, and then Keating completed the butterfly leg in 1:03.45, before Sokolova swam the freestyle anchor leg in 1:00.40.

Stonehill's 200-yard freestyle relay also performed well, taking fourth out of 11 teams in 1:50.03. Conley finished the lead leg in 28.13-seconds, followed by Sokolova with a 28.00-second split in leg two, before Keating finished the third leg in 27.21-seconds and then Stockwell completed the anchor leg in 26.69-seconds.

Stonehill will complete the three-week virtual series at the Old Colony YMCA in Taunton on Saturday, April 10.
