Seniors Lead Women's Golf in First Round of The Senior Showdown

Van Zanen tenth, Beaulieu 12th, to lead Skyhawks who sit fourth after first day

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (April 24, 2022) – Competing in the final event of their collegiate career, Stonehill College's two seniors are leading the way after the first round of The Senior Showdown, hosted by Stonehill, on the 5,822-yard, par-72 layout at The Ranch Golf Club this afternoon.

Franklin Pierce University, ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, is out to a commanding lead in the team standings after the first round with a 301 team score (+13) – 24 strokes lower than second place Adelphi University (325) who is led by Ilaria Ponziani who fired a three-under-par round of 69 today to hold a three-shot lead atop the medalist leaderboard. Franklin Pierce holds the next two spots on the leaderboard with Phisonlaya Ruayruen carding an even par 72 and Kesinee Prukmathakul posting a two-over-par 74 today. The College of Saint Rose is third in the team standings with an opening round 334, while Stonehill sits fourth at 347.

Stonehill is led by its two seniors in their final collegiate tournament, with captain Sloane Van Zanen shooting an opening round nine-over-par 81 today. She carded the Skyhawks lone birdie of the day on the 388-yard, par-5 ninth hole to finish the front nine at four-over (40). After a double bogey on the tenth, she settled down and finished three over par on the final eight holes to shoot five over on the back (41).

Senior Emma Beaulieu follows in 12th in the field of 23 golfers with a first round score of 83. She recorded a team-high nine pars on her round, which ranks fifth in the tournament, and played the course's four par-3's at even par to rank tied for second behind American International College's Tia Marie Martinez who shot an incredible three-under-par with birdies on three of the four holes. Beaulieu matched Van Zanen's five over par 41 on the back nine after carding a 42 (+6) on the front.

  • Freshman Mollie Thomas finished with an opening round 91 to rank 16th in the field.
  • Junior Emily Kase is 17th on the leaderboard after a round of 92 today. She recorded five pars on the front nine.
  • Sophomore Hannah Pignato rounded out the Stonehill lineup with a round of 94 to sit tied for 18th in the field, while classmate Emma Casey posted a 97 and is in 21st in the field while competing as an individual.
