Van Zanen Leads Women's Golf Again at SMSU Spring Invite

Phoenix, Arizona, senior tied for 14th overall to lead Skyhawks in homecoming event

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (March 7, 2022) – Senior captain Sloane Van Zanen leads three from Stonehill College with scores in the 80s after the opening round of the 2022 SMSU Invitational, hosted by Southwest Minnesota State University, on the 5,702-yard, par 71 layout at the Wigwam Resort's Blue Course, today.

Van Zanen posted a team-low round of 81 to lead Stonehill and sits tied for 14th in the field of 80 golfers, six strokes off the pace set by a pair of University of Nebraska-Kearney golfers, Faviola Gonzalez and Paige Lucero who each carded four over par rounds of 75 today. They hold a one stroke lead on the individual leaderboard and have the No. 31-nationally-ranked Lopers atop the team leaderboard by 16 strokes with a team score of 308 today. No. 40-ranked University of Colorado-Colorado Springs is among three teams tied for second with scores of 324 today, along with Missouri Western State University and Northwest Missouri State University.

Stonehill finished with three rounds in the 80s today and posted a 338 team score to sit ninth in the 12-team field – just ten strokes out of the top five. The Skyhawks recorded six birdies as a team today, a total that ranks third in the field, along with Nebraska-Kearney and Minnesota State University.

  • Van Zanen, who is coming off her first career top five finish a week ago in North Carolina, carded a pair of birdies in her round today, both coming on par 3's, on the 145-yard fourth hole as well as the 121-yard 15th. She also collected seven pars along her round.
  • Junior Julia Dapron follows Van Zanen from Stonehill with a round of 83 today and is tied for 24th in the field, notching a birdie on the par-4 14th hole, along with seven pars.
  • Senior Emma Beaulieu is just a stroke behind Dapron in a tie for 31st after a round of 84. She matched Van Zanen with two birdies, doing so on back-to-back holes on the 14th and 15th – holes also birdied by Dapron and Van Zanen, respectively.
  • Junior Emily Kase rounded out Stonehill's scorers on Monday with a 90 to sit 57th in the field. She recorded the remaining Skyhawks birdie on the 374-yard, par-4 sixth hole.
  • Freshman Mollie Thomas is tied for 65th overall after a round of 95.
  • Sophomores Hannah Pignato and Emma Casey round out the Skyhawks in the field, competing an individuals. Pignato posted a round of 94 and is 64th in the field, while Casey ranks 74th after carding a 100.
