Van Zanen Leads Women's Golf into Fourth at Pfeiffer Invitational

Phoenix, Arizona, senior cards opening round 78 to sit fourth on leaderboard as Skyhawks also fourth as a team

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. (February 28, 2022) – Senior Sloane Van Zanen carded an opening round 78 to sit fourth on the leaderboard and lead Stonehill College to fourth in the team standings as well after day one of the Pfeiffer Invitational, hosted by Pfeiffer University, on the 5,653-yard, par-72 layout, at Lion's Paw Golf Links at Ocean Ridge Plantation today.

Van Zanen posted a six-over-par 78 that included one birdie and 12 pars, scoring one over par on the front nine (her back nine) as she carded ten-straight pars at one stage. She sits fourth in the field of 58 golfers – seven strokes behind first round leader Monika Vicario from Meredith College who shot a one under par 71 today. Van Zanen will enter tomorrow's second and final round just two stokes out of second place.

Stonehill is fourth in the team standings after the first day with a 340 team score. Newberry College leads the way after the first round at 324, followed by Mars Hill University (334), Bridgewater College (335) and the Skyhawks. Stonehill leads fifth place Adrian College (344) by four shots and sixth place Southern Virginia University (348) by eight.

    Van Zanen shares the tournament lead in par three scoring (3.00), while ranking fifth in par four scoring (4.50) and second in pars (12). She recorded a birdie on the par four 12th hole on her third hole of the day that helped overcome a double bogey on the par four tenth.
  • Senior Emma Beaulieu posted an opening round 84, leading Stonehill with two birdies on the day (ranking third in the field), both coming on the back nine (her front) on the par three 11th and par five 13th. She is tied for 12th overall on the leaderboard.
  • Junior Julia Dapron sits tied for 17th after a round of 86, also posting a birdie on the par three 11th hole.
  • Freshman Mollie Thomas enters the second round tied for 29th after a round of 92, while junior Emily Kase finished with an opening round 97.
  • Sophomore Hannah Pignato posted an opening round 92 and is tied for 29th on the leaderboard while competing for Stonehill as an individual, along with classmate Emma Casey who posted an opening round 94 and is tied for 33rd overall. Pignato carded one of the Skyhawks five birdies on the day, doing so on the par five 13th.

The Pfeiffer Invitational will conclude tomorrow with second round play starting at 9 a.m. The Skyhawks are scheduled to tee off on the first hole starting at 10:30 a.m.
