Saint Michael’s Holds Off #13/14 Women’s Basketball in Opener, 75-72

COLCHESTER, Vt. (November 20, 2021) - Saint Michael's College turned back a second half comeback from Stonehill College, ranked No. 13 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II preseason poll and No. 14 in the D2SIDA Division II Media poll, and claimed a 75-72 triumph in the Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball opener for both at Ross Sports Center this afternoon.

The Details

  • Senior Nicole Ladas paced Saint Michael's with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting, eight rebounds and two assists. Classmate Emma MacDonough was just a rebound shy of a double-double for the Purple Knights with 13 points and nine boards, with two blocked shots.
  • Senior Emily Bramanti scored 17 of her career-high 26 points in the second half to lead Stonehill back from an 11-point halftime deficit, hitting 4-of-9 three-pointers, while making a run at a triple-double with a career-best eight assists, six rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot.
  • Senior Kayla Raymond outscoring Saint Michael's 28-14 in the third quarter as Bramanti and Kelly combined for 18 points as the Skyhawks made 10-of-17 shots, including 5-of-10 from three-point distance. Stonehill scored 11-straight points to turn an eight-point deficit (42-34) into a three-point lead (45-42) after a Kelly three-pointer with 5:48 left in the quarter.

    Stonehill entered the fourth quarter with a 57-54 lead. Saint Michael's scored the first nine points of the final frame to reclaim a six-point cushion (63-57) after two free-throws by Brophy.
  • Stonehill chipped away and forged back in front (66-65) after two-straight baskets from Bramanti.
  • The teams traded baskets until Ladas made a layup to put Saint Michael's in front (73-72) with 22-seconds remaining.
  • A missed three-pointer with seven seconds remaining forced Stonehill to foul where MacDonough knocked down both to give the Purple Knights a three-point advantage with two seconds to go. 
  • Stonehill called a timeout and Raymond's three at the buzzer didn't fall to end the game
