Gelcius Named NE-10 Field Freshman of the Week

Greenwich, Conn., native honored for first time

EASTON, Mass. (April 29, 2010) – Stonehill College’s John Gelcius (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) has been named the Northeast-10 Field Freshman of the Week by the Conference office.

Gelcius helped Stonehill to a first place finish at Friday’s Skyhawk Invitational as he won the javelin throw with an event and facility record throw of 178’08”. The personal-best distance is good for third among javelin throws among Northeast-10 athletes this season. Gelcius also placed tenth in the discus with a distance of 109’00”.

Gelcius placed in the top five for the javelin in all five meets for Stonehill this spring, placing second at the Holy Cross Invitational (171’10”) the previous week leading up to his win at the Skyhawk Invitational. He also placed third at UMass Lowell’s George Davis Invitational (176’00”) and Worcester City Championships (167’08”). The Skyhawk Invitational marked his collegiate debut in the discus throw, but he has competed in the shot put in three events, turning in a sixth-place finish at the Bryant Invitational (39’07.75”) and posting a personal-best throw of 39’08.75” in his ninth-place finish at Holy Cross.

During Stonehill’s indoor season, Gelcius competed in the shot put and posted a season-best throw of 41’10” for an eighth-place finish at the Northeast-10 Championships on February 18.

Stonehill is back in action on Saturday, when it serves as host of the 2010 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium starting at 9 a.m.
