Thomas Collects Second-Straight NE-10 Track Freshman of the Week Award

Brookline, Mass., native named Track Freshman of the Week for sixth time overall

EASTON, Mass. (April 15, 2010) – Stonehill College All-American Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) has earned Northeast-10 Freshman of the Week honors for Outdoor Track for the second-straight week by the Conference office. It marks the sixth time he has earned Track Freshman of the Week accolades, including the indoor season, and eighth Freshman of the Week honor overall.

Thomas, who earned Freshman of the Week honors four times during the indoor season and field Freshman of the Week honors twice for the indoor season, earned his second-straight outdoor track selection after turning in another dominating performance at the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell, on Saturday. First, he dominated the 110-meter hurdles for the second-straight week with a first place finish. His facility, meet and school-record run of 14.75-seconds was over a half second faster than the second place time of 15.30. He broke his own school record of 14.80-seconds set in his winning performance at the Bryant Invitational last weekend. He also shattered the meet and facility record of 14.99-seconds set by Donte Brown at the event in 2008. Thomas finished second in the high jump with a school-record height of 6’10.75, improving his previous school-record and provisional qualifying height of 6’09.50” set last weekend.

Thomas is coming off an indoor season which saw him earn All-America honors for the high jump with his third-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., last month. He posted the top indoor high jump in all of Division II during the course of the year with his school-record leap of 7’2.25” to capture the New England Championship for that event. Thomas was also named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Region and Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Athlete of the Year.

Thomas also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships for the 60-meter high hurdles, earning All-New England honors and capturing the Northeast-10 Championship for that event. He holds the school-record for both the 55-meter hurdles (7.45-seconds) and 60-meter hurdles (8.13).

Thomas won the high jump now in four indoor events (Reebok, Wheaton, Tufts & New England’s) to go with three victories in the 55-meter hurdles (Jay Carisella Invite, Wheaton & NE-10 Championships) and two wins in the 110-meter hurdles outdoors (Bryant & George Davis Invites) in his first collegiate season.

Stonehill, ranked fifth in this week’s USTFCCCA Division II East Regional rankings, is back in action this weekend with the squad set to be split between the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University, on Friday and Saturday as well as the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday.
