Thomas Named NE-10 Track Freshman of the Week

Brookline, Mass., native earns award for second time after more records fall

EASTON, Mass. (January 27, 2010) - Stonehill College newcomer Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) has been selected as the Northeast-10 men's indoor track Freshman of the Week by the Conference office this week.

Thomas, who earns the award for the second time this season, helped lead Stonehill to a third-place finish at the Wheaton College Invitational by winning both events he participated in with record-setting and provisional NCAA qualifying results in just his second collegiate event.

Thomas started the day by winning the high jump with a school-record jump of 2.07-meters (6'9.48") to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., in March. The leap bettered the previous record of 6'8" set by teammate Joe D'Agostino (Canton, Mass./Canton) last season at the Reebok Games in the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on January 30, 2009, and matched by Thomas at the season-opening Jay Carisella Invitational on December 5. The record-breaking jump on Saturday is the third-best among Northeast-10 athletes this season.

Thomas also won the 55-meter high hurdles by breaking his own school record set at the Carisella Invitational and bettering his NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a time of 7.67-seconds in the final after winning his qualifying heat with a time of 7.89-seconds. Thomas now holds the top two times in the Northeast-10 this season in that event. He has also won both 55-meter hurdle events he has entered this season following his record-setting win at the Carisella Invite in his collegiate debut.

Stonehill is back in action with a pair of events this weekend. The Skyhawks will compete at the Reebok Collegiate Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday night, as well as the BU Terrier Classic at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday.
