Thomas Named NE-10 Track Freshman of the Week

Brookline, Mass., native earns award following impressive collegiate debut

EASTON, Mass. (December 9, 2009) - Stonehill College newcomer Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) has been selected as the Northeast-10 men's indoor track Freshman of the Week by the Conference office this week.

Thomas enjoyed a successful start to his collegiate career at Stonehill in the Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern University, at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center last weekend. He provisionally qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships and achieved at least a share of two school records in both events in which he competed.

Thomas won the 55-meter high hurdles event at the Invitational, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with his school-record time of 7.69-seconds in the finals. His time of 7.70-seconds in the preliminary round was also better than the previous school record of 7.82-seconds posted by Max Hoddwells at the New England Championships last February.

Thomas also placed second in the high-jump at the Invitational with a school-record matching height of 6-feet, 8-inches. It matches the program mark set by senior teammate Joe D'Agostino (Canton, Mass./Canton) at the Reebok Games also held at the Reggie Lewis Center last January. Thomas was also a part of Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team which placed 12th at the event.

Stonehill is back in action this Saturday when it participates in the Harvard University Invitational held at the Gordon Indoor Track in Cambridge.
