Softball Falls in Saturday Matinee at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 30, 2024) – The Stonehill College Softball ended a three-game weekend series at Sacred Heart University Saturday afternoon, dropping the final game, 9-3, in Northeast Conference play.

Sacred Heart 9 (13-17, 7-1 NEC), Stonehill 3 (6-19, 1-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stonehill took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when freshman Caelan Beatty (Oro Valley, Ariz.) sent a double into the right-centerfield gap to bring in freshman Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) from first base.

Sacred Heart hit three doubles in the bottom half of the second to score a pair of runs, taking a 2-1 lead.

Junior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) tied the score in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI single that plated sophomore Natalie Bottiglieri (Massapequa, N.Y.) after she stole second to get in scoring position.

A solo homerun from the Pioneers broke the tie in the bottom half of the fifth before Sacred Heart scored five more runs in the sixth, building a 9-2 lead going into the final inning.

Stonehill scored one more run on an error in the seventh but the Pioneers closed out the NEC win, 9-3.
