Providence Sweeps Softball in Non-Conference Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 20, 2024) The Stonehill College softball team fell in a pair of games at Glay Field against Providence College in a non-conference meeting Wednesday afternoon.

GAME 1 – Providence 16 (8-12, 1-5 Big East), Stonehill 0 (4-12, 1-2 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stonehill finished the game with two baserunners and zero hits, drawing one walk and one hit by a pitch as Providence's Jessica Walter threw a five-inning no-hitter.

Two solo home runs from Hannah Aldrich and Emma Douma put the Friars ahead 2-0 in the first and Douma hit her second home run of the game in the third, putting Providence up 5-0.

The Friars scored eight runs in the fourth inning highlighted by a Gabriella Sebastian grand slam to make the score 16-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Junior Emily Nardelli (North Attleboro, Mass.) drew her fourth walk of the season, the third most on the Skyhawks.
  • Junior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) was the other Skyhawk to reach base in the first game after getting hit by a pitch.

GAME 2 – Providence 9 (9-12, 1-5 Big East), Stonehill 0 (4-13, 1-2 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Providence scored in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead after Brianna De La Fuente doubled down the left field line to bring in both of the Friar runners on base.

The Friars added to their lead in the third, plating three runs on three hits and a walk. Providence ended the game early after a double from Aldrich with the bases loaded drove in three more runs as the Friars won 9-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Freshmen Haleigh Reed (Mesa, Ariz.) and Harper Sullivan (Glendale, Ariz.) each went 1-2 while junior Jessica Brill (Natick, Mass.) also tallied a single in two at-bats in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

UP NEXT

Softball moved its three-game weekend series against Saint Francis at Fr. Gartland Field to Thursday and Friday this week due to inclement weather in the forecast. The Skyhawks and Red Flash will play at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow before playing a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
