Softball Defeated by Saint Francis in NEC Matchup

EASTON, Mass. (March 21, 2024) The Stonehill College softball team hosted Saint Francis at Father Gartland Field Thursday afternoon, dropping the Northeast Conference contest, 12-3, in six innings.

Saint Francis 12 (17-11, 4-0 NEC), Stonehill 3 (4-14, 1-3 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Stonehill starter junior Skylar Brandemarte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) rolled through the first 10 batters of the game, giving up one hit and pitching three scoreless innings for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill failed to score despite having runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings. The Red Flash plated the first run of the game in the top of the fourth, opening the floodgates as Saint Francis tacked on seven more runs to end the inning with an 8-0 lead.

Freshman Piper Hofmann (Windermere, Fla.) got the Skyhawks on the board with a pinch-hit single to shortstop that scored junior Chloe Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass.) who flew around the bases to score from second on an infield base hit.

In the top of the sixth, Olivia Ulum sent a line drive over the center field wall to tack on three more runs as the Red Flash notched four more insurance runs in the inning.

Stonehill scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth as junior Shannon Conte (Amesbury, Mass.) pinch-hit and contributed right away with a double to the warning track out in left field. Conte scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Caelan Beatty (Oro Valley, Ariz.) but that would be the last run of the game as Saint Francis closed out the game in the sixth inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Six different Skyhawks recorded base hits as well as runs batted in.
  • Stonehill had another perfect game in the field with no errors as the team fielding percentage improved to .962, the third-best mark in the conference.
  • Sophomore Jessica Brill (Natick, Mass.) caught two base runners stealing in the game, a season-high for one game as the Skyhawks lead the NEC with seven successful throw-outs this year.
