Skyhawks drop just five combined games over nine matches

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 10, 2022) – Stonehill College cruised to a 7-0 victory over Immaculata (Pa.) University in a non-conference men's tennis match at the United State Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus that was postponed from Wednesday due to inclement weather. 

Highlights

  • Stonehill dropped just five games over the nine matches played this morning, with no pairing losing more than one game in a set for the contest.
  • Freshman Guillaume Duhil de Benaze and junior Christian Duffy led Stonehill's double-winners in the match.
  • Also posting singles and doubles wins for the Skyhawks were senior Juan Camilo Riano Rojas, juniors Ben Simmons and Luke Nickerson, as well as sophomore Louis Coppi.
  • Duhil de Benaze dropped just one game over his wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles.
  • Nickerson didn't lose a game all day in matches at No. 2 doubles, with Duhil de Benaze, and No. 4 singles.
  • Coppi, Nickerson, Riano Rojas and Simmons all rolled to singles wins without dropping a game.

How it Happened

  • Duhil de Benaze and Nickerson set the tone in doubles play, rolling to a 6-0 win at No. 2 against the Immaculata tandem of junior Nicholas John and sophomore Jeremy Brown.
  • Duffy and Coppi cruised to a 6-1 decision at No. 1 doubles against sophomore Jason Watts and freshman Nicholas Fleming to clinch the doubles point for the Skyhawks, while Riano Rojas and Simmons posted a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles for Stonehill as well.

    Duhil de Benaze dropped just one game in his straight sets victory at No. 1 singles against Watts, 6-0, 6-1.
  • Duffy rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles against Fleming.
  • The remainder of the Stonehill lineup from No. 3 through No. 6 singles saw Coppi, Nickerson, Riano Rojas and Simmons win by 6-0, 6-0 score lines.

Stonehill (5-2, 0-0 NE10) wraps up its spring break trip tomorrow, when it faces Saint John's University of Minnesota at the USTA National Campus at 5 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match is their scheduled Northeast-10 Conference opener against Assumption University on Saturday, March 19, at noon. Immaculata (0-6, 0-0 AE) will face Kings College on Pennsylvania this afternoon at 3 p.m.
