Stonehill Saddened by Passing of Daniel Brix ‘16 (Updated 2/24 w/services)

Skyhawks men's basketball alum passed suddenly Wednesday, aged 30

OBITUARY

EASTON, Mass. (February 23, 2024) – Stonehill College is saddened by the sudden passing of men's basketball alum, Daniel Brix, a member of its 2016 NCAA Division II Elite Eight team, at the age of 30 in his home state of New Jersey.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dan," said Stonehill head coach Chris Kraus, '06, who coached Brix for four years, first as an assistant coach and then head coach for three years. "This news is absolutely heartbreaking, and I give my love and support to everyone who was close to him, especially his parents and family, and the thoughts and prayers of the entire Stonehill basketball family is with them during this time. Dan had so much love for his family, friends, the Stonehill basketball family, and all the players he has been coaching and mentoring in New Jersey. He was part of a special team at Stonehill and played an integral part both on and off the court towards our success. He will be greatly missed."

Brix started 48 of the 79 games he played over his four-year career at Stonehill following an All-State career at St. Joseph High School of Metuchen. He started 24 of the 28 games played during a senior season at Stonehill which saw the Skyhawks post a 24-9 record on their way to the third NCAA Division II East Regional Championship in program history and trip to the Elite Eight in Frisco, Texas. Previously, he scored over 1,000 points and helped lead St. Joseph to its first non-public championship and participated in the New Jersey All-Star Game. The business management major graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Stonehill in 2016, returning to his native New Jersey where he was working in client service and serving as an assistant varsity basketball coach at Colonia High School.

Brix, a native of West Orange, New Jersey, is survived by his parents, Christine and Tim Brix, as well as brothers, Timothy and Kevin.

A moment of remembrance will be observed prior to Saturday afternoon's Stonehill men's basketball matchup with Saint Francis University at Merkert Gymnasium (2 PM).

Visitation will be from 3 PM to 8 PM on Monday, February 26, 2024 and from 8:30 AM to 9 AM on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at the M. David DeMarco Funeral Home, Inc. 205 Rhode Hall Rd. Monroe Twp., NJ 08831, 732-521-0555. Funeral services will begin at 9 AM on Tuesday from the funeral home.
