The Skyhawks are looking to bounce back from a tough setback at No. 22 Fordham University last Saturday that wrapped up a three-game road trip in which the Skyhawks won twice, while the Red Flash come to Easton still in search of their first win after being picked to repeat as NEC Champions in the Conference's preseason coaches poll, being edged by Sacred Heart University 37-34 at home last Saturday.

Celebrating 75 Years
Stonehill College, founded in 1948 is celebrating its 75th Anniversary during the 2023-24 academic year. In September 1948, some 134 students — many of whom were veterans from World War II — gathered with the eight teachers who would serve as their faculty to celebrate Mass at the Chapel in Donahue Hall. That small gathering of students and teachers marked the beginning of Stonehill College. The College kicked off its 75th Anniversary Celebration on Friday with an outdoor Jubilee Mass in front of MacPháidín Library, followed by music, games food trucks and beer garden at The Quad leading up to a fireworks display by W.B. Mason. In honor of our 75th Anniversary, the Stonehill College bookstore is offering 10% off all in-store and online purchases through Sunday, October 1. Visit Stonehillshop.com and enter the following at checkout: SHCANNIVERSARY10.

AFCA Coach to Cure MD
The coaching staffs for Stonehill and Saint Francis are uniting with American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) members across the country in raising awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy this weekend. Coaches have carried the banner to raise awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne) for many years with its Coach to Cure MD program. Fans will see AFCA coaches wearing the Coach to Cure MD logo patch on the sidelines, educating fans about the cause on their social media, and inviting young men battling Duchenne to their campuses over the next two weekends. An initiative of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), Coach to Cure MD was launched with the American Football Coaches Association in 2008 and now includes the vast majority of major college coaches, and coaches in all divisions. Duchenne is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed during childhood, disproportionately affecting boys. People with Duchenne develop progressive muscle weakness that eventually causes loss of mobility, wheelchair reliance, and a decline in respiratory and cardiac function. Currently, there is no cure for Duchenne. Life expectancy can extend to age 30. Fans engage with Coach to Cure MD by using the hashtag #TackleDuchenne to spread the word on social media, by texting the word "CURE" to 501501 to give $25, or by donating in honor of their favorite coach on the CoachToCureMD.org website.

Against the Red Flash
This afternoon marks the second meeting all-time between these two programs as Saint Francis makes its first trip to W.B. Mason Stadium. The Red Flash posted a 17-13 decision over Stonehill in their first meeting in Loretto, Pa., last October. The game was Saint Francis' only Conference victory by less than 20 points on its way to winning the NEC regular season title. The Skyhawks were one of two conference opponents to hold a lead on Saint Francis at any point during a game last season.

Last Time The Met
Saint Francis University held off Stonehill in the second half in notching a 17-13 triumph in Northeast Conference (NEC) football action at DeGol Field. Saint Francis held a 14-3 lead after the opening quarter and made it stand the rest of the way to secure its fifth-straight win and remain atop the NEC standings at 4-0. Stonehill's defense, a week removed from a matchup at Sacred Heart University in which the teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense, forced three turnovers and held the Red Flash to just three points over the final three quarters. The Skyhawks saw a promising fourth quarter drive to take their first lead since a 3-0 edge after the first possession of the game, halted with a fumbled exchange in the backfield that was recovered by Saint Francis sophomore Colt Jennings on the Red Flash 25 with 11:33 to play. Stonehill would have two more possessions in Saint Francis territory down the stretch, but was unable to get much going on offense as the Red Flash defense sealed the win. Perry Shelbred (Ridgefield, Conn.) connected on two field goals from 39 and 40 yards, scoring seven of Stonehill's 13 points. Jermaine Corbett (Long Branch, N.J.) finished with 17 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown, while Cameron Alves (Cranston, R.I.) caught six passes for 50 yards. Gregory Reddick led the Saint Francis defense with 12 tackles (nine solo), including 1.0 for a loss of a yard, interception. Elijah Sarratt added five receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Last Time Out
Fordham University, ranked No. 22 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NCAA FCS poll, used four scores in the third quarter to pull away for a 44-0 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference football matchup at Moglia Stadium at Jack Coffey Field. Sophomore quarterback CJ Montes completed 14-of-21 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns, while junior running back Julius Loughridge carried the ball 14 times for 108 yards and a pair of scores to pace a Fordham offense that finished with 497 total yards. Postgrad wide receiver Garrett Cody contributed six catches for 119 yards for the Rams, also blocking and returning a punt for a touchdown on special teams. Junior linebacker James Conway paced a Fordham defense that held Stonehill to 257 yards with a game-high ten tackles (three solo)., including 1.0 for a loss of four yards, a pass breakup and blocked kick. Senior defensive back Micah Brown (Depew, N.Y.) totaled a team-high eight tackles (five solo) for Stonehill, while classmate Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) added five stops (all solo), including a sack for a loss of five. Senior running back Tom Comella (Johnston, R.I.) finished with 133 all-purpose yards for Stonehill, rushing the ball nine times for 51 yards, to go with three catches for 15 yards and 67 yards on five total returns. Classmate Jermaine Corbett (Long Branch, N.J.) added 95 all-purpose yards with 69 yards on 14 carries to go with a 12-yard reception and two punt returns for another 14.

Satkowski a Campbell Trophy® Semifinalist for Second-Straight Year
Stonehill offensive lineman David Satkowski (Southbury, Conn.) has been named among the semifinalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy® for the second-straight year, the National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Football Hall of Fame announced this week. Satkowski, an All-Northeast Conference first team selection last fall and preseason All-NEC pick this summer, is the lone NEC representative listed among 39 Campbell Trophy® semifinalists from NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) on the record list of 201 semifinalists across all levels of college football. Satkowski, the 2022 NEC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, is Stonehill's tenth Campbell Trophy® nominee over the last 11 years, and the first Skyhawk to earn a nomination twice after also being nominated and named a semifinalist in 2022. Satkowski, who graduated in May with a Bachelor's Degree as a secondary education and history dual major with a 3.82 grade point average, returned to the Skyhawks in 2023 to pursue his Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Education Graduate Certification. He attended the 2023 NFF Campbell Trophy® Summit for the first time and was named to the Hampshire Honor Society by the National Football Foundation last spring. Named in honor of the late Bill Campbell, former chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University, the Campbell Trophy® is a 25-pound bronze trophy and increases the amount of the recipient's grant by $7,000 for a total postgraduate scholarship of $25,000. The National Football Foundation will announce 12-14 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy® on October 25, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class presented by Fidelity Investments.

Tough Schedule
This afternoon's game is Stonehill's third against a 2022 NCAA FCS Playoffs participant after hosting then No. 12 New Hampshire for its season opener here in Easton, before facing No. 22 Fordham last weekend. Each of Stonehill's first four opponents owned winning records at the time of the game.

Polling Information
Stonehill dipped two spots to No. 9 in this week's New England Football Journal weekly rankings after being ranked No. 7  last week, No. 8 after the win over Central Connecticut State and No. 16 after week one following a No. 13 preseason rank. The Skyhawks are ranked first among the Northeast Conference's four New England programs, with Sacred Heart No. 11, Central Connecticut 12th and Merrimack No. 13. Stonehill's week one opponent, New Hampshire is ranked No. 3 in the poll behind top-ranked Holy Cross and No. 2 Harvard. Stonehill is 1-1 this year against teams in the New England rankings.

AYE, AYE CAPTAINS
Stonehill head coach eli gardner and his coaching staff have named four captains for the 2023 season. Fifth-year offensive lineman Thomas Walsh (Waldwick, N.J.) has been named a captain for the second-straight year and is joined by postgrad lineman David Satkowski (Southbury, Conn.), senior wide receiver Cameron Alves (Cranston, R.I.) and senior linebacker Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) as captain following a vote of their teammates during spring ball.
