Wagner Overcomes Skyhawks Fast Start, 28-17

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (October 28, 2023) – Wagner College erased a 14-point deficit 30-seconds into the second quarter, holding Stonehill College scoreless in the second half, to rally for a 28-17 victory in Northeast Conference football action on Hameline Field at Wagner College Stadium this afternoon.

Postgrad quarterback Steven Krajewski threw three touchdown passes, including a pair to freshman wide receiver Jaylen Bonelli, to lead Wagner to the comeback win. The duo combined for a 12-yard touchdown with 17-seconds remaining in the first half that pushed the Seahawks in front and the defense did the rest, holding Stonehill scoreless in the second half, to seal the win.

Krajewski completed 27-of-32 passes for 160 yards and the three scores without an interception, while Bonelli caught five of those passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Rickey Spruill rushed the ball 19 times for 101 yards, while junior Guenson Alexis chipped in with 60 yards on three receptions and a touchdown.

Senior Roberto Auguste paced the Wagner defense with 11 tackles (three solo), including 0.5 for a loss of a yard, and one of the Seahawks three interceptions on the afternoon. Freshman Zachary Ricci had a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown that knotted the score at 14-14 in the second quarter, while senior Junior Wiley added ten stops (seven solo), including 1.0 for a loss of two yards, an interception and pass breakup.

Junior wide receiver Chris Domercant scored both Stonehill touchdowns to stake the Skyhawks to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, collecting four passes for 86 yards. Senior Jermaine Corbett registered a game-high 118 all-purpose yards with 90 yards on 23 carries to go with five catches for 26.

Senior rover Anthony LaMonica led the Stonehill defensive effort with a career-high matching eight tackles (three solo), including 1.0 tackles for a loss of a yard, two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry. Classmate Sam Murphy added seven stops (five solo), including 1.5 for a loss of two and a breakup.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Stonehill grabbed an instant advantage with Domercant collecting a pass from junior quarterback Ashur Carraha at the Wagner 20 and running untouched the rest of the way for a 65-yard touchdown on the opening play from scrimmage of the game.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Domercant pushed Stonehill in front by two touchdowns 23-seconds into the second quarter with a five-yard touchdown catch from Carraha that capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive – the Skyhawks 14th double-digit play scoring drive this season.
  • That sparked 31-combined points by the two teams in the second frame, but Stonehill would get just a 44-yard Perry Shelbred field goal as time expired in the half the rest of the way.
  • Krajewski connected with Bonelli for their first touchdown of the afternoon with 10:43 to play in the second quarter.
  • Ricci's 49-yard pick six knotted the score with 3:50 remaining in the first half and then Krajewski connected with Bonelli for a 12-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 66-yard drive with 17-seconds remaining in the half.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Stonehill had a 12-play drive that came up empty on a missed field goal that would have cut the Skyhawks deficit to a point.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Krajewski's 19-yard touchdown pass to Alexis with 3:37 to play was the lone score of the second half and capped an 11-play, 81-yard drive for Wagner to seal the win.

Noteworthy

  • Domercant moves into seventh place on Stonehill's career receiving touchdowns list with 16 after his two scores today, passing Mike Plitchta, '06 and Gordon McLeod, '16 (15) today. Domercant also passed Kevin Dick, '18 (1,345) for eighth in career receiving yards at Stonehill with 1,398 yards in 22 games.
  • Domercant's two touchdowns are a season high and match his career-best accomplished for the fourth time in his career.
  • Domercant's 65-yard touchdown reception on Stonehill's first play from scrimmage is the Skyhawks longest play of the year and longest pass completion since a 69-yard touchdown by senior Will Diamantis from Carraha against Wagner last fall.
  • Wagner earns a win over Stonehill for the first time in four meetings all-time between the two dating back to 2008.

Stonehill (3-5, 2-3 NEC) has its second bye week of the season next weekend, before returning to action on Saturday, November 11, with an NEC matchup at Duquesne University at noon. The Skyhawks will return home on Saturday, November 18, when it wraps up the 2023 season with a Senior Day matchup with LIU here at W.B. Mason Stadium at 1 p.m. Wagner (3-5, 3-2 NEC) hosts Duquesne next Saturday at noon.
