NEC Football Weekly Report

EASTON, Mass. (September 11, 2023) – Stonehill College picked up a trio of weekly honors from the Northeast Conference for their performances in Saturday's 33-30 triumph over Central Connecticut State University to open the NEC schedule.

Senior placekicker Perry Shelbred highlights the selections with Special Teams Player of the Week honors after delivering a program-record matching and game-winning 52-yard field goal as time expired to clinch Stonehill's second-straight win in an NEC opener, while classmate Jermaine Corbett collected NEC Player of the Week accolades for the third time in his career and senior Micah Brown was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week. The trio were also named NEC Prime Performers for their efforts.

Shelbred's gamewinning field goal capped a nine-point afternoon for the Stonehill kicker to earn NEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career to go with a Northeast-10 Conference weekly special teams award in 2021. He also connected on a 22-yard field goal just before halftime that gave the Skyhawks a 16-7 lead and added three extra points. The career-long gamewinner matches the program-best by Joe Crowley, '04 against Bryant University in 2003 and is the longest by an NEC kicker since a 52-yarder by Wagner College's James Cooper against Sacred Heart University in 2016.

Shelbred ranks fifth among NEC scoring leaders with 7.0 points per game through two weeks, having converted all three field goal tries and five of six extra points. His three made field goals are tied for second in the Conference, while the five PATs rank third and he ranks second among all NEC kickers with 14 points.

Shelbred has appeared in 21 games over three years since transferring from the University of Rhode Island. He ranks 11th all-time in Stonehill history with 130 career points scored – 14 points shy of cracking the top ten, while his 70 career extra points rank fourth and 29 career field goals third all-time at Stonehill.

Corbett earns NEC Player of the Week honors for the third time in his career to go along with Offensive and Rookie of the Week accolades in the NE10 as a sophomore. He paced a Stonehill offense that finished with 399 total yards, including 236 on the ground, with a career-high 238 all-purpose yards as he carried the ball a season-high 28 times for a season-best 182 yards with a two-yard touchdown run that gave the Skyhawks a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter. He also collected five receptions for a career-best 57 receiving yards for the afternoon and produced 30 of Stonehill's 40-yards on the ground on the game-ending drive to set up Shelbred's gamewinning field goal.

Corbett took over the NEC rushing lead with 124.0 yards per game after two weeks, totaling 248 yards on 52 carries and a Conference-best three touchdowns. He is also averaging an NEC-high 165.5 all-purpose yards per game after two weeks and is tied for the Conference scoring lead with 18 points.

Corbett, an All-NEC first team selection last fall and a preseason All-NEC pick, surpassed 100 yards rushing for the first time this season on Saturday, but the fifth time in his career overall, to move into tenth place on Stonehill's career rushing list with 1,417 yards on 249 carries, while moving into a tie for ninth all-time with 14 career rushing touchdowns in 17 career games played.

Brown earns the first weekly Conference honor of his career after he posted a season-high seven tackles for the Stonehill defense on Saturday, including two key forced fumbles as the Skyhawks forced three overall in the contest. His first force came on the opening play from scrimmage near midfield and led to an opening Stonehill touchdown seven plays later for a quick lead it would not surrender the rest of the way despite three ties. Brown's second force came at the goal line on Central's first possession of the second quarter to prevent a game-tying field goal with the Skyhawks holding a 13-7 lead.

Brown shares the team lead with his 11 tackles (six solo) through two games, while his two forced fumbles lead the NEC. He has now appeared in 18 games over his Stonehill career and totaled 69 tackles (36 solo), including 2.0 tackles for a loss of four yards, a pass breakup and the two forced fumbles.

Stonehill (1-1, 1-0 NEC) is back in action on Saturday, when it continues a three-game road trip in Washington, D.C., against Georgetown University at 12:30 p.m. Stonehill alumni, parents and friends can register to join president Rev.
