Mason posts 14th place finish to lead Skyhawks at five-kilometer race

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (September 18, 2021) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 5 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional rankings, took eighth place out of 30 teams that competed on the five-kilometer Robert Dowd Cross Country Course at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational today. 

Highlights

  • Senior Claire Mason led the way for Stonehill by placing 14th out of 234 runners in the field overall, finishing in 18:53.40. It marks the highest individual finish of her career and her first top 20.
  • Mason was the lone exception to Stonehill's pack-run strategy for the race, which saw its remaining scoring runners finish together within a seven-second span between 62nd and 67th place.

Team Talk

  • Stonehill compiled 235 points at the meet for eighth out of 30 teams. Worcester Polytechnic Institute won the team title with 68 points, with Brandeis University second with 83 points and Mount Holyoke College third with 96.

Stonehill is back in action next Saturday, when it wraps up a stretch of three-straight weeks of meets at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational, hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College, at the site of the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship in November, next Saturday at 10 a.m.
