Early Goal Sends Stonehill Past Bentley, 1-0

Junior forward Drew Montano's goal in the 13th minute was the difference in Stonehill's 1-0 victory over Bentley this afternoon.

Skyhawks secure first victory against Falcons since September 14, 2005

EASTON, Mass. (September 24, 2014) – Junior forward Drew Montano (Avon, Connecticut/Avon) scored in the 13th minute and senior goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Massachusetts/St. John's Prep) made five saves to lift Stonehill College to a 1-0 shutout victory over rival Bentley University this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action at Skyhawk Field.

Just under thirteen minutes into the contest, Stonehill was awarded a penalty kick when Bentley junior goalkeeper Jack Blatchford (Douglas, Massachusetts/Douglas) lost control of the ball in the 18-yard box and tripped up a Skyhawk forward in an attempt to regain possession.

Stonehill senior back Ben Zandonella's (South Windsor, Connecticut/South Windsor) penalty attempt was stopped as Blatchford made a diving save to his left, but the rebound went right to Montano, who buried the ball in the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Making his first start of the season in net, Colella stopped all five of the shots that came his way to earn his eighth career shutout. The junior goalkeeper registered three clean sheets as a freshman in 2011 and two in each of the past two seasons.

The Skyhawks had several additional scoring opportunities, but Blatchford was solid in net for Bentley, making four stops. In the 72nd minute, Stonehill junior forward Craig Moreau (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) sent a cross into the box towards senior midfielder Tyler Brondyk (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield), who was unmarked. Brondyk sent a strong header towards the left side of the net, but Blatchford was there to make a diving stop to his right. Brondyk also hit the crossbar with a shot in the 35th minute.

Stonehill's victory this afternoon was its first against Bentley since a 3-0 triumph in Waltham on September 14th, 2005. The win also serves as just third for the Skyhawks in the past 18 meetings between the two teams, dating back to a 1-0 Stonehill victory over the Falcons at Bentley Field on September 16th, 1997.

Stonehill (4-2-1, 2-1-0 NE-10) will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, as the Skyhawks are set to take on The College of Saint Rose at 1 p.m. in Albany, New York. Bentley (2-4-1, 1-2-1 NE-10) will return home to host Le Moyne College Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
