Caldwell Rallies Past Men’s Basketball, 74-69

CALDWELL, N.J. (November 13, 2021) - Caldwell University used a 9-0 run over the final three minutes to key a 74-69 comeback win over Stonehill College, among teams receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Preseason poll and ranked No. 5 in the D2SIDA East Region poll, on the second and final day of the 2021 Caldwell Conference Challenge on Corino Court at the Newman Center this afternoon.

The Details

  • Caldwell University used a 9-0 run over the final three minutes to key a 74-69 comeback win over Stonehill College, among teams receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Preseason poll and ranked No. 5 in the D2SIDA East Region poll, on the second and final day of the 2021 Caldwell Conference Challenge on Corino Court at the Newman Center this afternoon.
  • Senior Anthony Cooper and freshman Mark Heber combined for 45 points to lead Caldwell to the win. Cooper scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 2-for-5 from three-point distance, with five steals, two rebounds and two steals, while Heber added 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 5-for-7 from long range, with three rebounds.
  • Senior Andrew Sims again led Stonehill with 14 points and seven rebounds, while fifth-year Owen Chose added 13 points, including the 1,000th of his career, on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-for-6 from deep, and three boards.

    Chose joined Stonehill's 1,000-point club with a three-pointer at the 9:03 mark of the first half, and finished the night with 1,011 points in 83 career games, moving into a tie for 39th on the program's career scoring list.
  • Sophomore Jackson Benigni came off the bench for a season-high 11 points for Stonehill, with five rebounds and a pair of assists. 
  • The closely contested game featured seven ties and 23 lead changes.
  • Stonehill carried a five-point lead (36-31) into halftime, but Caldwell grabbed the lead (42-40) on two free-throws from freshman Derrick Bueno with 14-minutes to play.
  • The lead went back and forth from there, with Benigni giving Stonehill the lead (64-63) with a layup off his own steal with three-minutes to go, but a Cooper triple reclaimed the lead for Caldwell on its next possession and sparked a game-deciding 9-0 run to open an eight-point lead (72-64) after two Bueno free-throws with 19-seconds to play.

Stonehill (1-1, 0-0 NE10) is back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts the University of Bridgeport for a non-conference matchup at Merkert Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Caldwell (1-1, 0-0 CACC) also faces Bridgeport next, battling the Purple Knights next Saturday, November 20, at Dominican (N.Y.) College at 5:30 p.m.
