Obituary

EASTON, Mass. (September 23, 2020) - Stonehill College is saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of former football head coach Rich Beal earlier this week.

Beal, who served as head coach at Stonehill for five seasons from 1999 until 2003, leaves behind his best friend and wife, Erica, three children, Perry, Max and Nicholas, and his faithful Sunday hiking companion, George the dog. Stonehill football head coach Eli Gardner, the entire athletic department and College community send their sincere condolences to Coach Beal's family.

Beal, who was an active board member for the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation (NFF) serving a term as president, took over at Stonehill in December of 1998 as the program's fourth varsity head coach. During his five seasons, Stonehill posted eight of the top ten single-game rushing performances in the school's varsity era at that point. He coached ten All-Northeast-10 Conference performers and four All-New England picks.

Beal's time as head coach at Stonehill was part of a 20-plus year career in collegiate coaching that included stops at the University of Massachusetts, Tufts University, Colorado School of Mines, Columbia University and his alma mater, Wesleyan University.

Visiting hours will be at the Pine Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald Street, Hingham, Massachusetts, on Sunday September 27 from 2-6 PM. In Rich's memory, his family asks that you consider hanging that extra Christmas decoration this December, supporting the hometown team and reaching out to someone 'just because'.
