Women's Tennis Defeats New Haven, 5-2

EASTON, Mass. (October 13, 2021) - Stonehill College, ranked No. 2 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings, clinched no worse than the No. 5 seed for the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with its 5-2 victory over the University of New Haven in an NE10 women's tennis match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

The Details

  • Stonehill moved a half game in front of Adelphi University in the NE10 standings with the win, with one match remaining over the weekend, while the Panthers wrap up with two matches in search of the No. 4 seed and hosting rights to the first round match between the two next Wednesday.
  • Senior Samantha Ormesher led the double winners for Stonehill on the day, along with classmate Emma Markaryan and juniors Cristina Solorzano Valencia and Steffi Antao.
  • Junior Alexa Orlando led New Haven as a double winner, combining with senior Nicole Mika for a 6-4 decision at No. 3 doubles that gave the Chargers a 1-0 edge in doubles play. Orlando followed that up with a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 5 singles against Stonehill junior Lily Peter.
  • Markaryan and Ormesher clinched the doubles point for Stonehill in tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, topping freshman Karim Carreras and postgrad Lilia Rodriguez, 7-6 (7-2).
  • Ormesher later provided the match-clinching point for Stonehill at No. 4 singles, holding off Mika in three sets for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
  • Solorzano Valencia and Antao, ranked No. 3 in the ITA Division II East Region doubles rankings, notched a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles for Stonehill. Solorzano Valencia, ranked No 4 in the East Region singles rankings, followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over East Region No. 16 Ivana Andric at No. 1 singles.
  • Antao, ranked No. 10 in the ITA East singles rankings, contributed a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win at No. 2 singles against Carreras.'
  • Markaryan finished off the match in a third set tiebreaker, defeating postgrad Gaayatri Shankar at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.

Up Next

Stonehill (6-3, 6-3 NE10) returns to action on Saturday when it closes out the regular season at Le Moyne College, ranked No. 7 in the region, for an NE10 match at noon. The NE10 Tournament opens next Wednesday, October 20, with first round action. New Haven (5-6, 4-5 NE10) closes out the regular season on Friday, when it hosts Saint Michael's College at noon.
