Medway, Mass., sophomore earns honor for first time after strong week

EASTON, Mass. (March 22, 2012) – Stonehill College sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week for women's tennis by the league office.

Martin, who earns the award for the first time in her career, is the second Stonehill athlete to earn the honors this season. She posted a combined 3-1 record in singles and doubles play, going 2-1 in double and winning her lone singles match of the week. Martin split her two matches while teamed up with freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and also picked up a doubles win with senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) at No. 3 in Stonehill's win over Minnesota State University Moorhead. She was a double-winner in the victory over Moorhead, collecting a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5.

Martin has posted a combined 12-4 record in singles and doubles play so far in her sophomore season. She is 5-1 in singles, including a 4-0 clip in NE-10 play, going 4-1 at No. 5 to go with a 1-0 mark at No. 4. Martin is 7-3 overall in doubles action, with her and Lawrence going 3-1 and posting a 2-0 record with Toegemann.

Martin earned second team All-Northeast-10 honors for doubles and third team accolades for singles play as a freshman and was also an NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection. She has posted a combined 55-16 record in her second collegiate season, which includes a 27-3 mark in Conference play. Martin is 24-7 record in singles over her career so far, including a 15-2 clip in NE-10 matches, while going 31-9 in doubles, with a 14-1 league record. Martin is also performing in the classroom as she was named to the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for the fall 2011 semester.

Stonehill (6-3, 4-0 NE-10) returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday when it visits American International College at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match is Sunday when they host Assumption College at 11 a.m.
