Stonehill Breezes Past New Haven, 9-0

Skyhawks drop just nine games in 15 sets on the afternoon

WOODBRIDGE, Conn. (October 1, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, dropped just nine games in 15 sets of play all afternoon on its way to a 9-0 victory over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Amity High School.

Senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and freshmen Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) and Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy) were all double-winners for Stonehill without dropping a game in two sets of singles action for the afternoon. Senior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephen Episcopal) rounded out the double-winners for the Skyhawks.

Toegemann, who has won all 24 games in two NE-10 singles matches so far this fall, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over New Haven freshman Brianna Kraynak (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) at No. 2 after combining with senior Bacall Brooks (York, Maine/Saint Thomas Aquinas) for an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Gilligan and Lawrence combined for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles and then cruised 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and 6 singles, respectively.

White and Denyes teamed up to post an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, before White notched a 6-2, 6-1 win over New Haven freshman Lindsey Conley (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) at No. 1 singles and Denyes picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) also won in straight sets without dropping a game in No. 5 singles.

Stonehill (2-0, 2-0 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it visits Pace University of another NE-10 dual match at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks return home to round out the fall season against Le Moyne College on Sunday, October 16, at 10 a.m. New Haven (0-4, 0-3 NE-10) visits The College of Saint Rose tomorrow at 1 p.m.
